This Week's
"DEEP DIVE"
DESSERT SPECIAL
It's National Dessert Month, so Mark will play 2 hours of the best American music
suitable for the occasion, that you can enjoy guilt-free,
thanks to that icon of dessert, Ronald Reagan,
who established the holiday in 1984.
THE GUITAR MAN - Mark closed the first set with Cake and their version of the David Gates/Bread song - and told the story of how he (Mark) formed the first band called Cake with his friend Perry Botkin, Junior. Their first (and only) record was the Theme From Mork and Mindy, written by Perry and co-produced by both of them. There's the standard version and a 12" Disco version.

BLUEBERRY HILL - Mark ended the fourth set with classic Fats Domino hit - but told the story of the weirdest version ever. For your listening and viewing horror, may we present the live version by none other than Vladamir Putin? (And WTF was Goldie Hawn doing there?)

TUTTI FRUTTI - Mark played this Little Richard-penned song in the fifth set, using the Rufus Thomas version of the song...but how about a very early TV appearance of 11 year old Brenda Lee covering it?

TEN MORE SHOPPING DAYS (TILL THE BOMB) - Mark closed the fifth set with a band that started up as The Weeds in Las Vegas, ran out of gas in Portland, Oregon, and were "discovered" by The Seeds manager, the crazy Lord Tim Hudson, who changed their name to The Lollipop Shoppe. TEN MORE...has been reissued on an EP under the new band name.
Below is a poster of a Portland show, where former Raider guitarist Drake Levin played with his band The Golden Hind the same week in February 1967. You'll also see a press photo of the planned (and unplanned by Daddy Dean?) wedding of Lord Hudson to Claudia Martin, who was later an item with Terry Melcher.
