This Week's
"DEEP DIVE"
NATIONAL COLOR DAY
Chevy sponsored a conrest in 2009 to name the new VOLT,
and that resulted in us getting a special day to celebrate color.
So..... Mark will play 2 hours of the best American music
suitable for the occasion.
THE CHEVY VOLT - Mark told the story of the contest to name the new silvery green EV. The finalists were:
- EV-ergreen
- EnvironMINT
- Viridian Joule
What name would YOU have picked? Answer at the end of the Deep Dive, before the prior show links.

BLACK IS BLACK - Mark talked about the darkest shade of black, and opened the first set with The Standell's cover of the Los Bravos hit. The Standells covered both ends of the spectrum - here they are doing SOMETIMES GOOD GUYS DON'T WEAR WHITE on Where The Action Is.

BOWLING GREEN - Mark played the Glen Campbell cover of the Everly Brother's hit to close the first set. Here are Glen, Phil, and Don all singing the tune live on The Smothers Brothers show in 1968.

I HEAR A VOICE - Mark started the fourth set with a Raider song mentioning multi-colored "healing beads", and told the rather dark story of how he and Terry Melcher came to write and record it. They're they only two performers on the song, with Terry playing piano and celeste.

BLUE STAR - Mark played this recording from 1961to begin the final set, and announced that he was releasing it from the vaults for the very first time TODAY. He wrote the song with Gary Paxton, who backed Mark on the recording, along with a few studio friends. Mark told the story of the inspiration for the song. He'd just turned 19 when he cut it, so this makes the song his first EVER solo recording. You can get a pristine digital copy HERE, and listen to it below in lower quality from when a fan recorded it off Mark's Portland, Oregon radio show on KISN when he played it once, many years ago.
NOTE: We normally take down all fan-uploaded recordings on YouTube, Vimeo, etc of Mark's post-Columbia recordings, since streaming revenues don't come close to recouping the expense of the production. Mark is the artist and has the right to determine how one of his recordings can be accessed. He decided to let this one stand, due to its age, but please understand that that doesn't change his regular rule on the uploads. Thanks to everyone who respects his decision.
