LOVE MUSIC - Mark kicked off the show today with this tune covered by Rare Earth. It was first recorded (simultaneously and unbeknownst to each other) by the Raiders and The Four Tops. Here are the three versions - pick your favorite!
TOO MUCH TALK - For the first set, Mark played this Raiders tune, which he wrote about government inaction on important issues. It was the first record he produced on the group, following Terry Melcher leaving to devote his time to his mother's financial mess.
MERCY MERCY ME (THE ECOLOGY) - Mark selected this iconic Marvin Gaye song to open Set 2.
Here he is performing it in a medley with WHAT'S GOING ON on the 1983 Motown 25 special.
MR. SPACEMAN - Mark played this Byrds song in set number 3 and told the bizarre story of the publicity stunt that marked its release....no doubt a product of PR agent Derek Taylor's vivid imagination. Mark also talked about the Artemis crew's return from their moon slingshot.
PHOTOGRAPH - Mark played this Shelby Flint environmental song from his solo career in Set 4.
EVERYBODY WANTS TO RULE THE WORLD - Mark chose this Patti Smith cover of the Tears For Fears hit in the fifth set.
BURN ON - Mark played this Randy Newman song about Ohio's Cuyahoga River catching fire in Set Six.
IT'S SO HARD GETTING UP TODAY - Mark wrote this song about the L.A. smog, and played it in the seventh set today.
IT'S A HARD RAIN GONNA FALL - Mark picked this ("Raider for a month in 1961") Leon Russell cover of a Bob Dylan classic to close the last set.
HARD DAY ON THE PLANET - Mark closed the show with Loudon Wainwright III.
THANKS to everyone who bid on Mark's memorabilia in the Julien's auction in November, and congratulations to the winners! We accidentally packed some acetates so they went to Hawaii instead of Julien's. We'll have Ryeland Allison transfer them after the holidays, so keep an eye on this website for news on their posting.
