OH MAN! - Mark kicked off the show today with Fantastic Cat, who as you can tell, don't take themselves too seriously.
I'M A MAN - Mark played this 1967 Sonics' cover of this Bo Diddley in the first set, released on their first Jerden album to little fanfare. Its lackluster performance was blamed on the "polish" that the label's owner, Jerry Dennon, insisted that producer Larry Levine put on their raw garage rock sound. Perhaps Jerry had seen the Raiders' massive success after they'd undergone the same "polishing" under the tutelage of producer Terry Melcher, and hoped that lightning might strike twice?
WALK LIKE A MAN - Mark selected this Four Seasons hit for Set 2. below is a clip from the pilot for Where The Action Is, and you might notice "you know who" turn his head as the camera begins to pan through the audience up at Big Bear. The footage has obviously been enhanced with AI and shows just what could be done with all those low-resolution tapes in the vaults at Dick Clark Productions.
OH! TO BE A MAN - Mark played this Raider tune to open set number 3, and talked about its inspiration being his fractious relationship with his father. He also suggested that producer Terry Melcher may have selected the song for inclusion on the album because of his own issues with his father and step-father.
SMOKIN' IN THE BOYS ROOM - Mark played this Cub Koda/Brownsville Station hit to open Set 4.
SWEET LOVIN' DADDY - Mark chose this Betty Wright tune, co-produced by Steve Alaimo (Where The Action Is), for Set 5.
PAPA WAS A ROLLING STONE - Mark played this Black Crowes' cover of the Temptations hit to open Set 6.
PAPA OOM MOW MOW - This Rivingtons' hit was in the seventh set today, and below is a video where they close out the Steve Allen Show with it, as Steve gets DOWN with it!
DIDDLEY DADDY - Mark picked this Bob Diddley tune, covered by Chris Isaak, to open the eighth set.
POP, LET ME HAVE THE CAR - Mark closed the show with this Carl Perkins tune.
THANKS to everyone who bid on Mark's memorabilia in the Julien's auction in November, and congratulations to the winners! We accidentally packed some acetates so they went to Hawaii instead of Julien's. We'll have Ryeland Allison transfer them after the holidays, so keep an eye on this website for news on their posting.
