"DEEP DIVE"

CAR CRAZY
This weekend in 1956, President Eisenhower signed the bill that would create the Interstate Highway System in the USA, and as a result,
American car culture was off and running.
In tribute, Mark will play two hours of the best American
"Car Crazy" music on this weekend's show.

HEY LITTLE COBRA - Mark opened the show with Bruce Johnston and Terry Melcher recording as The Rip Chords. Mark was at the session in 1963, and got his first introduction to "studio magic" by seeing Bruce record the "Shut 'em downs" with his head in a wastebasket.

MOTORING - Mark played this Martha & The Vandellas song to open the first set.

GET OUT OF MY MIND - Mark played this Raider tune to close the first set, and told the story about its inception and recording. It's an autobiographical song reflecting what he often did when he was troubled - get in his Ferrari and drive to work through the issue. The song begins with the sound of his car's 12-cylinder engine, as recorded as he raced up on Mulholland Drive, although he describes it as "Coastal Highway" in the song.

BE THANKFUL FOR WHAT YOU'VE GOT - Mark played the cover of this William DeVaughn hit, as recorded by Arthur Lee and LOVE, and mentioned that Davante DeVaughn recorded the song later.

NO MONEY DOWN - Mark played a cover of Chuck Berry's hit to open the third set, as recorded by Jules Blattner & TheTeen-Tones. The never hit in big outside of St Louis and Hawaii, but they got a gig entertaining the troops in Vietnam during the Tet Offensive in 1968, courtesy of the USO.

WELFARE CADILLAC - Mark played the Gary B.B. Coleman cover of Guy Drake's 1970 hit, which caused a bit of a problem when Johnny Cash refused to perform it at The White House for Richard Nixon. Here's Guy performing the original on a show hosted by Porter Waggoner, followed by Gary's cover.

DRIVING AROUND - Mark opened the fourth set with this Beach Boys-inspired song by Eric Carmen and The Raspberries.

LITTLE RED CORVETTE - Mark closed the seventh set with Prince, and told the story of how the song idea came to him after falling asleep in a 1964 pink Mercury Marauder. Here's what that classic beauty looks like!
