This Week's
"DEEP DIVE"
LES PAUL
This weekend marks what would be Les Paul's 109th birthday. While you might think of him as a "guitar guy", his contributions to recording technique innovations have probably had an even greater effect on the sound of music.
After Bing Crosby gave him one of the first Ampex reel to reel tape recorders, his experimentation led him to stack 8 of them together and record onto one track of tape. And in 1954, he commissioned Ampex to build the first integrated 8 track tape recorder, which revolutionized the recording process.
Les was nearly electrocuted in 1941, and later survived a car crash which, in lieu of amputation, required a complex operation where his right arm was fixed in a right angle position where he could play his guitar. You can see how he uses the arm in everyday life below on this amazing tour of his early inventions. It's followed by Les live on stage explaining another invention.

WE LOVE YOU - In the second set, Mark played the new Grip Weeds take on this Stones song, which was the "B" side of Dandelion. That's Kristin playing her Les Paul on the song.

OBSERVATION FROM FLIGHT 285 - The second set also featured this Raider track which includes Wrecking Crew member Louie Shelton playing a Les Paul on the solo. The phasing and other effects Mark used when he produced the song are directly attributable to Les Paul's innovations in the recording process. The tune is on the Raiders' Complete Columbia Singles 3-CD Set, available personally autographed to you HERE.

FLY LIKE AN EAGLE - played Steve Miller in a duet with Les Paul in the fifth set, and told the story of Les' long association with the entire Miller family. Here are Les and Steve (his godson) at the 90th birthday celebration for Les.

COMING INTO LOS ANGELES - Arlo Guthrie featured in the sixth set, and Mark told the story of how Arlo was inspired to write the song. FYI: the flying chickens were REAL! Below: here's Arlo at Woodstock...

BIRTHDAY - We closed with a birthday wish for Les Paul, without whom music would be very very different today. MY boss, Stevie Van Zandt, provided the track.
