This Week's
"DEEP DIVE"
DON'T GO NEAR THE WATER
On this day in 1988, the Discovery Channel launched its very first week-long event of shark-themed programming, which they dubbed Shark Week. Viewers loved it, and it's become the longest-running event in cable news history. So today,
Mark will play 2 hours of the best American music designed to keep you out of the water because of a myriad of creatures lurking there -
unless you're brave enough to venture in...
Of course, the fascination with, not to mention the fear of sharks went off the charts when Steven Spielberg brought the novel JAWS by Peter Benchley to life in 1975.
Benchley procrastinated in writing the book, and kept working on it when his agent periodically reminded him that if he didn't turn in a manuscript, he'd have to return the advances he'd been paid. That money had long been spent, so Benchley slogged on.
The book had no title until a few minutes before production began, and they finally settled on JAWS.
The resulting movie was the first summer blockbuster, and had the biggest gross in history until Star Wars was released.

MACK THE KNIFE - Mark opened the show with the Brian Stetzer Orchestra version of the Bobby Darin hit, and told the story of the song's history - including conjecture that it might have been based on Jack The Ripper. By the way, Dick Clark tried to discourage Bobby from recording the song, since he was afraid it would typecast him.
Here's Bobby performing the song on the Ed Sullivan Show in 1959, followed by one of the earliest versions of the traditional Scottish song, performed in the German movie "The Threepenny Opera." The video has the original, much darker lyrics on the closed captioning.
