Today, Mark uses Dave Marsh's 1989 book Heart and Soul - The 1001 Greatest Singles Ever Made to select two hours of the best AMERICAN music on his list

I HEARD IT THROUGH THE GRAPEVINE - Mark kicked off the show today with Dave's #1 pick by Marvin Gaye.
LITTLE SISTER - Mark played this Elvis tune, Dave's 431st choice, in the first set. Here's a 1970 medley with GET BACK.
HIPPY HIPPY SHAKE - Mark selected this Chan Romero tune for Set 2, Dave's choice for #131 on his list. Below is the rare DEMO version.
SMILING FACES - Mark played The Undisputed Truth in set number 3, which came in at #677 on Dave's list.
BORN TO RUN - Also the title of Dave Marsh's first Springsteen biography, this tune was #24 on Dave's list, and Mark played it in Set 4. When Bruce later penned his autobiography, he used the same title.
GAMES PEOPLE PLAY - The Joe South original was #780 on Dave's list, and Mark played it in Set 5. He also talked about producing Raider Freddy Weller's country version that launched his solo career on Columbia.
HANKY PANKY - Coming in at #911 on Dave's list, The Shondells were Mark's choice for Set 6.
THE CHEATER - Mark played Dave's #998 by Bob Kuban and The In-Men in the seventh set today, and told the sad and iron story of lead singer Walter Scott.

THE WANDERER - Mark played this Dion song (Dave's #112) in the eighth set, and talked about his upcoming autobiographical Broadway musical of the same name.
(WHAT A) WONDERFUL WORLD - Mark wanted to know which song JUST missed Dave's 1001- song cutoff, so he closed the show with this Sam Cooke tune. Dave Marsh had revealed that it was #1002 on his list. Here's a little bit of what was going on when it was released in 1960.
