Mamie Van Doren - Here’s a recent photo of Mamie with Robert Bird, who’s the Executive Producer of the upcoming docu-series WHERE THE ACTION WAS, about the 60s music culture in Los Angeles. Mamie was one of the pioneers of rock and roll and recently sat for a very interesting interview. Mark Lindsay will be the host of the series, and here’s a link to its IMDB page.
Magic Town - Although we played the version by The Vogues, this Mann-Weil song was first recorded by country music artist Jody Miller. And in 1964, the Raiders had a club gig in San Francisco where they were Jody’s back-up band. Here’s a bit more about the artist lucky enough to have Paul Revere & the Raiders as her band! JODY MILLER
Oklahoma - Their record was the only co-production of Mark Lindsay and Terry Melcher, but this very talented band unfortunately had their career blow up just as they hit the big time. As Mark said on the show, their manager insulted the big record executive and the LP pressing was canceled. Things got even worse when Hoss, the Raiders ex-road manager who had worked with Oklahoma, sued Mark and Terry because he wanted some remuneration for his efforts, despite that not being part of any agreement. The suit was thrown out of court and unfortunately destroyed Mark's long term friendship and working relationship with Hoss. Here’s an interview with Steve Crossley that explains more of the band’s story.
