This Week's
"DEEP DIVE"
AUTUMNAL EQUINOX
We slide out of Summer and into Fall on Sunday, September 22 at 8:43AM EDT,
so Mark will play 2 hoursof the best American music
to make the transition. You might start out in shorts today,
but you'll need a sweater for later on
TURN TURN TURN - Mark opened the show with Steve Conte's great version of the classic song.

(BOP BOP) ON THE BEACH - Mark opened the third set with Jan & Dean and The Flirts, from the Karate kid movie soundtrack. Mike Love wrote the song, and its HIS voice you hear in the actual movie with The Flirts.

DEATH IN THE AUTUMN AIR - Mark closed the sixth set with one of author (and music critic) Stephen King's favorite artists, Michael McDermott. Stephen wrote the liner notes for one of Michael's albums, and you can peek into their association HERE. But as Mark said on the show, Michael's life afterwards was anything but a fairytale. He was supposed to be the next Bruce Springsteen, but he wasn't ready. After hitting (a very deep) bottom, he straightened out, got married, and is back at it. This is a great piece on him in the Chicago Tribune. It's behind a paywall, but it's only $1 for a year of digital access.
"There was the time his best friends had a security guard break down his apartment door because they feared he’d died of an overdose. There was that coke-fueled night in some singer’s apartment with three strippers, one of whom attacked him with scissors before the other two began pounding her face. There was the warning he received to quit speaking to that mobster’s girlfriend, during one of those misadventures that helped inspire the movie “Rounders.”
