This Week's
"DEEP DIVE"
CINDERELLA SUNSHINE - Mark told the story of how the song came to be...and here's Miss Cynderella from the GTOs, the inspiration for the song when Mark ran into her on Sunset Boulevard in 1968.
Cinderella Sunshine is one of the Raiders' songs which is different as a single vs an album cut. The Raiders had a CBS contract which allowed for unlimited studio time (something the label soon regretted), and with such a luxury, Mark had a chance to experiment with different versions of songs he particularly liked.
THE FUZZTONES - On today's show, Mark talked about playing with the Fuzztones in Greece. Although the Thessoloniki clip with Mark singing in his shorts seems to be MIA, here's one of the rehearsal they did in Athens, followed by audio of a live version of Kicks from the show.
THE GAMBLERS - In the RAIDERS' PLUS segment, Mark played the Gamblers' version of "Moon Dawg" and explained why the Raiders' version sounds so "remarkably" similar! You can hear it again on the YouTube video below. The Gamblers consisted of Mark's roommate Derry Weaver, who wrote the song, Bruce Johnston, Elliott Ingber, Larry "The Mole" Taylor, and drummer extraordinaire Sandy Nelson.
FIRST RAIDERS' TOUR - Derry Weaver and Larry Taylor later joined Mark Lindsay on an early Raiders tour of the midwest, including this one in Hayes, Kansas on May 24, 1961. Rod Schaeffer was on drums, and Leon Russell was on piano. Bruce Johnston had been booked for the tour, but changed his mind at the last minute, to be replaced by Leon. Larry Taylor went on to be part of Canned Heat, and Leon Russell, of course, had a stellar career as part of the Wrecking Crew, not to mention his solo work. Mark says he learned more in 2 weeks of working with Leon than he would have learned from anyone else. Leon tore up the show with wild piano antics (like kicking the lid off the piano into the audience), and Mark credits him with instigating the showmanship that became the Raiders' trademark.

COREY WELLS & THE ENEMYS - Also in the RAIDERS PLUS segment, Mark talked a bit about the late 1964 gigs at the Pink Pussycat a Go Go, where the Raiders and the Enemys shared the bill. Mark's voice was getting ragged from relentless screaming, and he had been diagnosed with a nodule on his vocal cord. Corey was offered a job as Raider lead singer if Mark's surgery was unsuccessful, but luckily for both of them, Corey passed, and Mark recovered without a hitch and actually ahead of the game. His post-surgery vocal coach suggested he alternate his hard rocking style with breathy moments, and the result can first be heard on Just Like Me, and becoming his signature style.

UNDER MY WHEELS - in the FASTER THAN YOU segment today, following telling some hair-raising falling-asleep-at-140-mph tales, Mark played this Alice Cooper tune. If you haven't heard it on the Friday Music audiophile 180-gram vinyl release, you're in for a treat. More info HERE (and check out ALL of the Friday Music audiophile releases!)

SILVER BIRD - Mark closed the show with his 1970 solo hit. The song reached #7 on Billboard's Adult Contemporary chart, #20 on Cash Box, and #25 on Billboard's Hot 100. It was used in Yamaha commercials at the time, and then hit the jackpot in 2022 by being featured in the new action thriller, "The Gray Man," starring Ryan Gosling and Chris Evans. Produced by Netflix with a $200 million budget, their largest production ever, it just hit theatres on July 15th, and will begin streaming on July 22nd. Julia Butters, the charming little girl you may remember from her scenes in the saloon with Leonardo DiCaprio, plays the role of Claire, who loves her vinyl, and in particular, Silver Bird by Mark Lindsay.
Here are a couple of trailers from the movie for you to enjoy!
