This Week's
"DEEP DIVE"
TOBACCO ROAD - On today's show, Mark talked about the recording of Tobacco Road in 1972, and having to convince jazz great Larry Carlton that he could play some heavy rock and roll. Tobacco Road was one of the songs planned for what's become known as "The Lost Album", which still languishes in the Columbia Records vaults. But Mark brought his personal copy of the Tobacco Road tape to Sony HQ in 1989 when he worked with the label on the Legend of Paul Revere double CD compilation, played the song, and convinced the powers that be to add it to that compilation, where it first saw the light of day.
And here's a video of Mark performing the song live in 1990.

THE RARE BREED - Mark played their version of "Come and Take a Ride in My Boat" / "Come on Down to My Boat Baby" which pre-dates the Every Mother's Son release. You can hear it again on the YouTube video below, but beware, the guys photographed there aren't The Rare Breed. If you Google up the band, you'll find it's shrouded in a lot of mystery, even confounding the meticulous Nuggets researchers. The only thing certain is that they aren't any version of the Ohio Express, a trademark exploited by Super K Productions, which was their former production company. The Ohio Express name was later put on another previously-released Rare Breed single, "Beg, Borrow, and Steal." Kinda in your face, huh?
NO MORE MR NICE GUY - In the ROCKIN' HOBBIES segment, Mark talked a bit about some rockstar leisure-time hobbies you might not be aware of. Alice Cooper, not exactly Mr. Arnold Palmer, wrote an autobiographical/golf tips book where he describes trading a whiskey obsession for one involving chasing a small white dimpled ball around. You can check out more on Golf Monster HERE.
CHERRY CHERRY - in the FRUIT-FLAVORED segment today, Mark played Neil Diamond...but here he is introducing him on Where the Action Is. Not sure how Neil, a pretty serious guy, felt about all the Raider antics going on around him...
ANGELS OF MERCY - Mark closed the show with the other Raider tune that Larry Carlton played on. It's one of Mark's favorite songs that he recorded. Also planned for "The Lost Album", he also convinced Columbia to include it on the Legend project of 1990. Here it is from an expanded version of Country Wine released much later.
