This Week's
"DEEP DIVE"
KICKS - In the Oregon segment, Mark played the 2008 Everclear version of the Raiders 1966 hit. The previous October, Mark was asked to represent the Raiders at the Oregon Music Hall of Fame for the band's induction, and to join Everclear on Kicks, who would back him on a few other numbers. Mark agreed, on the condition that OMHOF also include Steve West, the guitarist who had played the iconic guitar solo on the Raiders' version of Louie Louie. Mark felt that Steve had never had his time in the spotlight for this contribution to Raider history, and this would be his time to shine.
Meanwhile, a few weeks before the ceremony, Mark got a call from OMHOF saying that Phil Volk also wanted to join Everclear and him on stage. Mark told Terry Currier, who was running the ceremony, that it was finally Steve's time in the spotlight, and after all, Steve was from Oregon. Phil persisted, OMHOF kept saying no to Phil, and Mark thought it was all settled. But on the night of the ceremony, with Steve joining Mark on stage, he suddenly saw Phil appear from the wings with his bass, with Roger Hart carrying an amp behind him. Phil ran to the center of the stage and began to take over, Steve - who's a bit of a shy guy - disappeared into the background, and Mark was furious. We're telling this story now since there's a video of the event out there, and Mark has been criticized for his body language and "attitude" towards Phil. Well, now you know the rest of the story.
Finally, in 2019, when Mark was inducted as a solo artist, Steve joined him on stage again for Louie Louie.
JIM MESI - Mark closed out the Oregon segment with Jim's version of Apache. When Mark had a radio show on KISN in Portland, he did a live performance gig for the station, and was lucky enough to have Jim as part of his band. Here's a special treat for you: Jim Mesi in a film with former Raider Pete Ouellette, who also produced it.
DINO LEE AND GODS AMONG MEN - When Mark's friend Robert Bird lived in Austin, "Dino Lee" was one of his personas. Robert and Mark are working on a couple of projects together: The "Oregon Project" (music) and the Where the Action Was docu-series. But while you're waiting for those, please enjoy a replay of Let Me Go from today's show.
THE GRIP WEEDS - In the New Jersey segment, Mark featured his pals and their version of Louie Go Home from their new project, DIG, available HERE. Here they are playing the song live in studio.
And while we're at it, here Louie Go Home as done by David Bowie, aka David Jones and the King Bees, as well as by The Who
JUST SEVENTEEN - Mark closed the show with this tune from the Raiders' COLLAGE album. The guitar solo that sounds like a doubled guitar is not - it's a guitar and soprano sax in unison. John d'Andrea played the sax, and also did the arrangement for the horns.
