This Week's
"DEEP DIVE"
ROUTE 66 - Mark opened today's show with John Mayer's rompin' version of the theme song. Below you'll find a clip about the songwriter, Bobby Troup, who went on to be Dr Joe Early on the 70s TV show Emergency. And we've also included the 8+ minute version of the theme.
MOJO WORKING - Mark closed out the Illinois Too segment with Muddy Waters' version. Here's how the Raiders did it in 1964 on the sessions recorded for the "live" side of the Here They Come album (although it was kept in the vault until a 2-CD reissue on Sundazed. That's Mike Holladay on bass.
BROKEN RADIO - Mark played this at the end of the Oklahoma segment, lamenting about having a broken radio if you were on a long road trip like the Route 66 trip today. He recorded his Video Dreams album in 1996, and this track is one of eleven on the CD. You can get it here, and it's autographed by Mark.
CHEVELLE V - Mark included their "Come Back Bird" in the Texas/New Mexico set. This Abilene band was hugely popular in Texas in the 60s, and after winning a battle of the bands (more than 600 entries), they won a record contract with Dot Records, but unfortunately, nothing came of it. Let's hear them again.
NORMAN PETTY - The Texas/New Mexico segment closed with Buddy Holly and Jimmy Gilmer & the Fireballs. A lot of amazing music came out of Norman's studio in tiny Clovis, NM - you can read about it HERE.
Mark also mentioned that Norman played the Hammond SoloVox Model J on Sugar Shack. Here's a video showing how it works.

Rebel Rouser - Mark ended the Arizona set with Duane Eddy's Rebel Rouser. Here are a few of his memories about the song:
"Let me tell you a little bit about how Duane Eddy influenced the Raiders’ first guitar player and me. Robert White, known as “Mooney”, was also my roommate in Idaho around 1959 and 1960. Mooney owned 2 small reel-to-reel tape recorders, and he would tape things off the radio to one of the recorders. Then, we’d play along with the song as we listened to the tape - Mooney on guitar, me on my new sax - while recording ourselves on his SECOND tape recorder. It was a good way to listen to ourselves playing, learn from our mistakes, and a great way to learn licks. I must have a dozen of Mooney’s tapes from when we were learning Rebel Rouser, so that memory really stands out to me. We must have really liked the song and wanted to get it down note for note. Thanks Duane for the inspiration."

OUR CANDIDATE - Mark included the Standell's version of the Raiders' Our Candidate in the first California set. It's ONLY available to stream or on the Sundazed expanded edition CD, available HERE.
Let's compare it with the original, sung by its songwriter, Mike "Smitty" Smith.

LOUISE - Mark closed today's show with this tune, written by Jesse Lee Kincaid. Jesse was a member of The Rising Sons, who were signed to Columbia and who were produced by Terry Melcher, so that's how the song found its way to the Raiders. Here's another listen to Louise, followed by the songwriter himself. When you listen to Louise, listen for Terry's parts - he does all the really high harmonies at the end of each verse ..."that girl is out of season" etc
