This Week's
"DEEP DIVE"
TERRY MELCHER - One of Terry's later productions was the Beach Boys Summer in Paradise project in 1992, a record without any participation by Brian Wilson, who was in the middle of his Dr Landy issues then. It was the first album ever released using the new technology of Pro-Tools, on a computer, and the low sampling rates back then resulted in somewhat of a harsh sound vs the warm sound of analog recording. In any event, the album was poorly received and resulted in the distributor's bankruptcy. Sometimes, the magic just isn't there, but you can listen to the whole album here and decide for yourself.
Earlier, when he was a staff producer at CBS, Terry Melcher had the unenviable task of trying to coalesce the diverging talents of The Rising Sons, with limited success. Even the CBS promotion echoed the dilemma:
RICHARD PODOLOR - One of the Raiders' first engineers under the direction of Gary "Alley-Oop" Paxton, Richard is probably best known for the slew of hits he had producing Three Dog Night. He also produced ex-Byrd Chis Hillman, both as a solo artist and as part of the Souther-Hillman-Furay Band. Mark played one of their songs today on the show featuring incredible drumming by Jim Gordon, who was also on many Raider sessions as well. You can hear Border Town and Jim again here.
GARY USHER - One of Mark's favorite tunes from today is Gary's production of The Wackers' version of Don't Be Cruel, from their 1971 Wackering Heights album. Elvis, it ain't!
CRAIG LEON - Another one of Mark's favorite new discoveries that he played on the show is Craig's production of Rolene, by Moon Martin. Moon also wrote Bad Case of Lovin' You, which Robert Palmer made into a huge hit in 1979. Here's moon with Rolene and his original version of Bad Case.
BRUCE JOHNSTON - If you listen to Bruce's Surfer's Pajama Party frat house project, it's pretty obvious why Terry Melcher delegated Bruce the task of producing the "live" Raiders' tracks recorded at CBS in November 1964. Frat rock knows frat rock! You can see more about Bruce's CD HERE.
Some of the tracks later became half of the Raiders' first album, Here They Come!, and others saw a release much later on the Mojo Workout CD decades later. Still others remain in the vault at CBS. The Raiders at that time consisted of Drake Levin on guitar, Mike Holladay on bass, Mike "Smitty" Smith on drums, Revere on keyboards, and Mark on lead vocals. You'll notice a certain raspiness to Mark's voice that day, not surprising given the screaming he did on that session, especially on Ooh Poo Pah Doo. He went into the hospital the following month to get a nodule on his vocal cord removed, and a vocal coach helped him develop a singing style where he alternated breathiness, growling, and (limited) screaming, so he could save his voice.
Here's one more tune from those live sessions, which Mark used to close today's show.
