ROCKET 88 - Ike Turner and Jackie Brenston told the tale of this car in the first segment today. HERE'S a great article on the history of the 88, with lots of groovy photos.
YOU CAN'T CATCH ME - Mark played this Chuck Berry ode to the Aerocar, a car that could fly when its wings and tail were attached, and mentioned that one of the few models ever produced was used for traffic watch by a Portland, Oregon radio station. That station was KISN, and here are some shots of the transformer-type car/plane. It was used by the station in 1961 and 1962, and as Mark said on the show, survived the infamous Columbus Day storm of 1962. On that day, Mark was driving his 1948 Pontiac (purchased from Paul Revere for $35) to get an amp repaired, and knew things were bad when huge billboards were flying by him. More info on the KISN Aerocar HERE - and you can buy it!
JUDGE GTO BREAKAWAY - Before Segment 4 of today's show, Mark told the story of how the transition from Time After Time to Judge GTO Breakaway came to be. Here's the original commercial. Trivia: The commercial was re-cut in the early 90s and was used for a promotion in the NY/NJ/CT area
90 MILES AN HOUR DOWN A DEAD END STREET - If you hadn't heard The Empty Hearts before Mark played them on today's show, you were in for a special treat.
CORVAIR BABY - Unsafe at any speed? You can read about it HERE and decide for yourself. Or watch what Jay Leno has to say about it...
CORVAIR BABY
I got a gal digs rallies the most, Corvair baby
We head for the course way down by the coast, Corvair baby
I'll make the first turn, she says "Oh yeah"
I'll make the second, she'll smile
'Bout the time we're in the straightaway, she's by my side
But whoa yeah, she digs my style
Stick with me, baby, and stay by my side, Corvair baby
'Cause I want you there whenever we ride, Corvair baby
We'll be together wherever we go
And everybody will know
Hey, you're my baby, my Corvair baby
And I'll, I'll never let you go
(guitar solo)
Well, I'll make the first turn, she says "Oh yeah"
I'll make the second, she'll smile
'Bout the time we're in the straightaway, she's by my side
But whoa yeah, she digs my style
Stick with me, baby, and stay by my side, Corvair baby
'Cause I want you there whenever we ride, Corvair baby
Now, we'll be together wherever we go
And everybody will know
That you're my baby, my Corvair baby
And I'll, I'll never let you go, hey
You're my baby, my Corvair baby
And I'll, I'll never let you go
Whoa, you're my baby, my Corvair baby
And I'll, no I'll never let you go
A bit more about the song:
It was written by Wilson Stone, who started off as Carol Burnett's audition accompanist, and was later hired by Paramount, where he wrote lyrics for movies with composers such as Burt Bacharach. He also worked in the genre of "industrial musicals" (who knew that was a thing?) and worked with Cessna and Xerox, among other companies. No doubt his ad agency contacts led to his creation of Corvair Baby.
Here's his legacy as told in his obituary.
Terry Melcher was not involved with the production of either SS396 or Corvair Baby, since they were commercial projects brought in from the outside, so the production fell to Mark. This was very early in the Raiders' recording career, so what he hadn't already learned from Terry, he made up as he went along. Phil Volk suggested that he sing lead on Corvair Baby, but as producer-for-the-day and 1/2 owner of the band along with Revere, Mark told him no. Phil, who was a salaried employee for Mark and Paul's production company and not an owner of the band, became more insistent on doing the lead vocal. An argument ensued, and finally Mark said, "Phil, NO, I've always been the lead singer of the Raiders since the band was formed, and I've got this."
