Mark celebrates the best of American summer music
MICKY DOLENZ AND THE MONKEES - Mark played YOU BRING THE SUMMER in the first set today, and talked about Micky suing the Department of Justice this week to get the unredacted Monkees files. Who knew The Monkees were so subversive?
Hey Micky - Mark found another redacted page from the FBI for you! ;)
THE RAMONES - In the second and third sets today, Mark played Freddy Cannon's Palisades Park, and The Ramones' Rockaway Beach. The Ramones also recorded Palisades Park, and here they are doing it live.
WHERE THE ACTION IS PILOT - In the third and fourth sets today, Mark played two of the artists who appeared on the 1965 CBS pilot for the show, Bobby Freeman and Jan & Dean. And here's that pilot for the show that ended up over at ABC, with an eventual 520 episodes broadcast.
HIM OR ME - At the end of the fifth set, Mark played this song and explained how that British accent came to be...
UNDER THE BOARDWALK - Earlier in the set, Mark played this Drifters' classic. Did you know it was co-written by Kenny Young, who also wrote Arizona and Silver Bird? And here's a rare video of Kenny singing UNDER THE BOARDWALK live.
HOT FUN IN THE SUMMERTIME - Mark closed the sixth set with a 1981 Mike Love demo of Hot Fun in the Summertime, and Mark expressed his opinion that it was a better version of the song than the one the Beach Boys later recorded in 1992. You decide - here are both versions:
RENO - Mark closed the show with RENO and how that song came to be. Here's a video of girl who was the inspiration...and Mark singing of what might have been. BTW that's Nick Hoffman doing an amazing job on the harmonica.
