This Week's
"DEEP DIVE"
MUSIC AND THE FIRST AMENDMENT
This week, we celebrate the anniversary of the signing of the Constitution
on September 17, 1787, which also included the Bill of Rights. The First Amendment won't keep you out of Facebook Jail, but it WILL protect you from the government throwing you in a penal colony if you criticize the folks who run Washington. And that's why we're able to play you some very cool - perhaps controversial - songs today.

TOO MUCH TALK - What better way to kick off a show about Freedom of Speech than with a song about Too Much Talk?
BEN FRANK'S - Benjamin Franklin was one of the signers of the Constitution, and wouldn't he be surprised to see the fellow longhairs that populated his namesake spot 200 years later? Aside from being the historical spot where Mark met "Starlyn" in 1962 ;), this iconic Hollywood eatery was at the center of the rock and roll scene in the 60s. (Imagine the gull-wing Mercedes in the spot occupied by the car in the photo, with Mark's little gold Valiant behind it.)
Knowing a bit about Ben Frank's gives this audition advertisement a bit more meaning. Here's a great article on the Monkees angle...How one hip coffee shop on the Sunset Strip had heavy influence on the Monkees
LAST TRAIN TO CLARKSVILLE - Mark played this song to begin the third set. The story of a guy heading off to Vietnam, it's as close to a protest song as co-writer Bobby Hart thought the Monkees could do at that time. If you haven't already read Bobby's book Psychedelic Bubblegum, where he talks about writing it (plus some Raider mentions), you can find out more about it HERE
SUNSET STRIP RIOTS - Mark talked about the unrest on Sunset, and getting mixed up in it, in the break between the third and fourth sets. For an excellent, more in depth look at the fall of discontent on the strip, make sure you check out Dominic Priore's EXCELLENT book on the subject HERE
EVE OF DESTRUCTION - In the fifth set today, Mark played Barry McGuire's classic version of the protest song...and here's the Raider's take on it...from the Indian Reservation album
THE REVOLUTION WILL NOT BE TELEVISED - To close the sixth set today, Mark played Gil Scott-Heron's spoken-word/early rap/early hip-hop piece on the dichotomy between daily life as seen in TV commercials vs what was really happening in the streets. If you heard Mark's description of Gil demonstrating at his college for better student health care, read this article about Gil and you'll know why. Here's this powerful song one more time...
TAKE A STAND - Mark ended the show with this protest song he wrote with Keith Allison, Take A Stand, from the Raiders' Country Wine album. Keith played bass, rhythm, and slide guitars, and that's Louie Shelton playing against himself on lead guitar, with Joe Junior on drums.
