We'll recognize the heroes all around us -
whether they're our fictional Superheroes
or the person next door who goes the extra mile.

HUNGRY - To recognize our food delivery heroes, Mark opened the show with an alternate version of the Raiders' 1966 hit, Hungry. See if you can hear the differences - there are a lot of them. Mark plays bari sax on both versions, but it's more evident on the alternate, with its double intro.
We all learned in 2020 how important essential workers like truck drivers and retail clerks were to putting food on our tables. Here's a shot of some Florida Publix truck driver American Heroes leading the way to a barrier island severely impacted by Hurricane Ian, just after a bridge was repaired this week, delivering food to a very grateful group of people.
SUPERHEROES - Mark devoted the third set to Superman (with a little aside to Jimmy Olsen being a bit jealous in regards to Lois Lane), and the fourth set covered Mighty Mouse, The Hulk, and Batman. As Mark mentioned, the Traits' garage-y Hulk tribute was sold only via Marvel Comics ads.
And of course, Mark had to include a mention of the Raiders' appearance on Batman, where they played at a political rally for The Penguin, on an episode called "Hizzoner The Penguin." Here's a clip:
EVERYDAY HEROES - Mark included songs about the "average Joe" hero in Sets 5 and 6. Sometimes a simple thing is heroic, and actually isn't simple at all. Something as simple as being there for a friend can make all the difference in the world. Mark's YOU'VE GOT A FRIEND doesn't fit the Underground Garage format, but it definitely fits the theme for today.
HEALTHCARE HEROES - Mark included the story of The Raiders' Dr Fine in the last set, and closed the show with Angels of Mercy, one of his favorite arrangements for the group.
