This Week's
"DEEP DIVE"
IT'S A HALLOWEEN PARTY!
This week we're playing some cool songs of the season, and we're dipping into the favorite songs playlists of horror author (and music aficionado) Stephen King
A while back on Mark's Facebook page, we asked followers to figure out his childhood Halloween costume ideas by picking out what HE hadn't ever dressed up as.
Here the answer and some proof:
Cowboy - definitely, several times over the years. My father was convinced he should have been a cowboy...settled for being a mountain man. We always watched Westerns and I had full cowboy regalia, including a cap gun.
Arab Sheik - one year my mother was on a multi-cultural bend...My sister was a princess from India with sari, etc...I was a sheik with wooden scimitar. We must have had sheets ready for upcycling that year
Pilot - absolutely with photo proof. Here I am in my pilot helmet (probably a snowsuit hat) and military shirt; Naomi is in her WAC uniform. Our father was still in the Army...probably taken Halloween 1944.
Pirate - surprisingly, no!
YOU CAN'T SIT DOWN - Mark kicked off the party with this early Raider tune, recorded in November 1964 at CBS Hollywood and produced by Bruce Johnston. Mark thinks it's one of Smitty's best performances, and of course that's the amazing Drake Levin on guitar. The song also showcases Mike "Doc" Holladay's walking bass style, which you can listen for on other pre-1965 CBS recordings on the Here They Come and Mojo Workout albums. Mark also told the story of Smitty's "unfortunate incident" at a San Francisco nightclub in the early days while playing this song.
THE LYRES - In the fourth set, Mark played "I Want To Help You Ann." Stephen King called it, "The best stalker rock song ever" and guaranteed you'd forget "Every Breath You Take" as creepiest song of that genre.
STEPHEN KING'S HAUNTED CARS - Mark played "Little Cristine" by Mickey Leigh's Mutated Music in the fifth set, and Bob Dylan's "From A Buick 6" in the seventh set, and talked about Stephen Kin's "Christine" and "From A Buick 8". You can find out more about those books HERE and HERE.
BLOODBATH OF FUZZ - Also in the seventh set, Mark played this way cool song by 45 Spider. He loved it and had it on replay for a while at home this week. If YOU couldn't get enough, here's a live version. You can get the album on their Bandcamp page HERE
SHEENA IS A PUNK ROCKER - In the final set today, Mark played this song by The Ramones, which was featured in the movie adaptation of Stephen King's Pet Sematary. The Ramones also did the theme song for the movie. You can get the cool art mashup from Todd Alcott Graphics on Etsy HERE and the DVD of the movie HERE
