This Week's
"DEEP DIVE"
TIME FOR A CHANGE
This week we're playing some cool songs to get you in the mood for a time change!
Don't forget to set your clocks back tonight and enjoy that extra hour of sleep....
SONNY GERACI - In the first set, Mark played TIME WON'T LET ME, a #5 hit by the Outsiders, with lead vocals by Sonny Geraci. Sonny went on to have a #3 hit as lead singer for Climax with PRECIOUS AND FEW. Here's a TV appearance by both of the bands.
BACK IN TIME - Also in the first set, Mark included a song that Huey Lewis and friends wrote for the 1985 movie BACK TO THE FUTURE. Here's the video....
TIME IS ON MY SIDE - Mark ended the fourth set with an early version of the song by Irma Thomas, and explained that after the Stones recorded it, the Raiders added it to their live repertoire - and that's why it was included as a track on HERE THEY COME.
TIME TO VOTE - Mark devoted the fifth set to the other timely thing happening this week - remembering to VOTE by this coming Tuesday! He selected Smitty's Dylanesque OUR CANDIDATE to kick things off, and followed it with Alice Cooper's tongue-in-cheek ELECTED.
NO TIME LIKE THE RIGHT TIME - Mark opened the seventh set with this Blues Project song, and talked about Al Kooper's "Kooperphone". That instrument was actually a Tubon, a weird 1966 Swedish predecessor to the keytar. It had six pre-set sounds: tuba, contrabass, electric bass, sax, bass, and woodwind. Paul McCartney owned one, and supposedly it was used on an early version of Strawberry Fields Forever, later replaced by a Chamberlin.
LIFE AND LOVE, TIMES TO COME - Mark also played this song in the seventh set, an unusual and very cool departure for The Grip Weeds. That's Kurt Reil on drums and lead vocal, Kristin Reil on sitar and flute, and Rick Reil on guitar. Narin Budacar is on tabla, and Any Burton is on Mellotron.
SOMETIMES - Mark ended today's TIME show with this song from the Raiders' Here They Come album, and told they story of how Terry Melcher recorded the track with The Wrecking Crew, because he didn't feel the band was ready for the studio yet, and flew Mark down from gigs in central California to add the lead vocal. Here he is with the Raiders, lip-synching to that track on Where The Action Is.
