This Week's
"DEEP DIVE"
NATIONAL HAPPY HOUR DAY
Grab your tea or coffee, your mimosa or Bloody Mary, and listen along!
JUNIOR'S BAR - Mark opened the second set with this song by The Iron City Houserockers, produced by Stevie Van Zandt - and that's him on lead guitar. More on the band and the song HERE....
BIKINIS - Mark devoted the third set to bikinis, in honor of the USS Arkansas, the ship where the concept of Happy Hour originated, and which met its end at Bikini Atoll during a nuclear test. He played these two songs, which have some rather campy videos...
MAD MEN - Personifying the "golden age" of the unfettered Happy Hour, this series aired on AMC for seven seasons beginning in 2007. Mark devoted the fourth set to some of the music used in the show. Did you know one of the episodes mentioned Mark?
Mark closed the Mad Men set with this Northern Soul rarity by Edd Henry. You can find out more about the show's soundtrack HERE
THE SWINGER - Mark played this Ann-Margret tune in the sixth Happy Hour set, and you can see the entire movie here. Watch for Ann-Marget's body double in the "rolling around in paint" scene - it's Teri Garr (who was also the delivery girl in the Where The Action Is pilot).......
CRISCO PARTY/WALKIN' THE DOG - Mark also played this Raider medley from the Mojo Workout project, which was an expanded version of Here They Come! That's producer Bruce Johnston you hear at the beginning, and the session was from September 1964, with Mark, Revere, Drake Levin, Mike Holladay, and Smitty.
ONE BOURBON, ONE SCOTCH, ONE BEER - Mark closed the eighth set with this song by John Lee Hooker, and also told the tale of the original artist, Amos "3 Shot" Milburn. Here's both of those versions, and for good measure, one by George Thorogood!
LAST CALL - Mark closed the show with a reminder to enjoy one of last Happy Hours at The Flamingo Club before it closes for a while. Of course, the fictitious club is the one featured in the Netflix series LILYHAMMER, and owned by Giovanni "Johnny" Henriksen a/k/a mobster Frank Tagliano a/k/a Stevie Van Zandt, who in addition to starring in the series, was also a writer and executive producer for it. It looks like Netflix is pulling the series from its lineup at the end of November, so is probably your last chance to catch it on the network. It's a black comedy, feature some GREAT music, and is guaranteed enjoyable. Mark loved the series and played this track by Little Steven and The Interstellar Jazz Renegades at the end of today's Happy Hour show. You can get more info on the Lilyhammer soundtrack HERE - it's all very cool. Here's a video of the song from the soundtrack, and one live from Arsenio Hall.
