This Week's
"DEEP DIVE"

SATURNALIA
This week, we'll celebrate
the ancient Roman festival of SATURNALIA,
which begins on December 17th
and continues almost until Christmas.
Many of the traditions of this festival later became part of
our contemporary Christmas celebrations.

WEAR A SMILE AT CHRISTMAS - Mark started the show with this song from the Raiders' 1967 A Christmas Present...and Past album, and 'fessed up that it was indeed him doing the LBJ Texas drawl in the song. You can get it PERSONALLY AUTOGRAPHED to yourself (or a friend) HERE. (And until Christmas, all orders that total $50 US$ before shipping will get an upgrade to FREE PRIORITY MAIL - details in the store.)

TWIST AND SHOUT - In the second set, Mark played the first version of this song, as recorded by The Top Notes in 1961 - listen to it again in the video below. And he mentioned that The Raiders were among the 200 or so groups that recorded the song. Here's a rare video of them doing it on Where The Action Is!

WHAT WOULD SANTA DO - Mark closed the third set with this Micky Dolenz and the Monkees tune, from their CHRISTMAS PARTY project. You can get the CD HERE.

.

GOLDEN GIRLS SOMETIMES / FAREWELL TO A GOLDEN GIRL
 - Mark played the songs in the fourth set and told the story how and why the songs were written.

JOLLY GREEN GIANT
- Mark played this song in the seventh set, but instead of choosing the more familiar version by The Kingsmen, he chose one by The Knickerbockers. That band was discovered by Mark's producer Jerry Fuller, who produced their giant Beatle-esque hit, LIES. So...let's have a Battle of the Bands - do you choose the Kingsmen or The Knickerbockers?

CHRISTMAS ALL OVER AGAIN - Mark played this Tom Petty tune in the seventh set. Here's a video of Tom and The Heartbreakers in the studio as they recorded the song, with all proceeds from the song going to benefit Special Olympics.

BLUE CHRISTMAS - The show ended with this track from Mark's 2002 TWAS THE NIGHT BEFORE CHRISTMAS album of classic holiday tunes. You can get a CD PERSONALLY AUTOGRAPHED to YOU right HERE!
