This Week's
"DEEP DIVE"
NEW YEAR'S PARTY
It's an All-Request party kickin' 2022 out the door
and welcoming 2023!
and welcoming 2023!
PETER GUNN THEME - Mark started the show with this song from his LAST MIDNIGHT RIDE 2-CD set, recorded live at his 12/31/2003 "retirement" show.
We have just a few CD sets (with coordinating show poster) available. If you'd like to be on the waiting list to pick up a set, please let us know via the contact form on the CONTACT PAGE and we'll contact you in the order the requests are received...as soon as we unpack them from our move.
.
JERRY LEE LEWIS - Mark played Whole Lotta Shakin' in the third set, and afterwards, told the story of playing with The Memphis Horns on what became Jerry's Southern Roots project. Mark's pictured and credited in the liner note booklet, and you can see more about the Bear Family release HERE.
Mark was invited to do the sessions by Jerry Williams, who was the Raiders road manager from 1967-68, and who owned the studio where Southern Roots was recorded. Jerry had a rather fertile imagination, if you catch the drift, and once in a while it caught up with him.
Here's a feature article on Jerry Williams from 1972, where Jerry is made out to be the playboy of Memphis, and one of many articles from the early 90s, when he ended up in Federal prison. He was the bag man in an extortion scheme and had delivered/hidden the bribe in a toilet. Unfortunately, many of the articles mentioned his association with the Raiders and called him the band's manager, elevating his role significantly. Jerry had introduced Mark to Sheriff "Fate" Thomas in the 60s, who gave him a hat bearing the name FATE, and told him to call him directly if he got into trouble there.

DINO DANELLI - Mark played I AIN't GONNA EAT OUT MY HEART ANYMORE in the fourth set as a tribute to drummer Dino, who passed away recently. Here's a video of The Rascals doing the song on Hullabaloo as part of a skit with comedian Alan King.
TS HENRY WEBB - Mark opened the fifth set with Henry's 79th Blues. You can hear more of this artist on ReverbNation HERE.
At the end of that set, Mark played New Year's Resolution and talked about the liner notes written by Republican Senator Howard H. Baker, Jr. (Not exactly Dick Clark!) Here's part of them:
THE HOMBRES -
Mark played their most well-known song in the 8th set, but here's a link to the only TV appearance by the group where they do AM I HIGH? - and check out those guitars!!
