This Week's
"DEEP DIVE"
STARTING YOUNG
This week, we're featuring artists who started
their path to stardom at very young ages
their path to stardom at very young ages
STEVE WEST - Mark started the show with the Raiders' original April 1963 version of LOUIE LOUIE, where 16 year old Steve West plays some great guitar, and told the story about Steve (and Smitty) joining the band. Unfortunately, Steve passed away recently, but his work lives on in this iconic work. Here's that original version, with a very unusual lineup: Revere on bass, Mike "Smitty" Smith on drums, Mark on sax and vocals, and Steve on both rhythm and lead guitars. As a contrast, here's also the version cut in November 1964 at Columbia Records, with Revere on keys, Mike and Mark on their original parts, Mike Holladay on bass, and Drake Levin on guitar.
.
SUSAN COWSILL - At the end of the first set, Mark played The Cowsills HAIR, and talked about touring with them, when youngest member Susan used to sneak into his dressing room and try on his Raider hat and boots! Susan tells the story in the liner notes of the duet album she and Mark did a few years back called LOVE IS STRANGE. You can get a copy signed by both Susan and Mark, and personalized to YOU by Mark, HERE

LESLEY GORE - At the end of the fifth set, Mark played Lesley's performance of YOU DON'T OWN ME from the T.A.M.I. Show. Here's her entire performance from that special.
DAVID GATES - Mark opened the sixth set with his version of BEEN TOO LONG ON THE ROAD, and talked about how much he loved the story that David Gates told in the song.
Here's a listen to Bread's version of the song, followed by Mark's:
BEEN TOO LONG ON THE ROAD is one of 24 tracks available HERE on Mark's Complete Columbia Singles CD, personally autographed to YOU.
TRAVELIN' MAN - In the 8th set, Mark played this Ricky Nelson tune, written by Mark's producer Jerry Fuller. Mark recorded a version for his BOOK OF LOVE CD, and you can get one PERSONALLY AUTOGRAPHED to YOU right HERE!
SHAKE IT UP - Mark closed the show with a snippet of SHAKE IT UP PART 2. Shake It Up Part 1 and Part 2 were recorded in 1962 when Steve West was on guitar, and released on Gardena Records. A different (and shorter) version of the song was later recorded at Columbia Records with Drake Levin on guitar. That final version was the B side of Kicks.
