This Week's
"DEEP DIVE"

QUIRKY PRODUCERS
We're featuring some of the best - and most eccentric -
record producers today!

SHARON - Mark started the show with the version of Sharon that the Raiders (Mark, Revere, Jerry Labrum, Dick White, Bob "Mooney" White) recorded at IMN Studios in Boise in 1960. And he talked about the version recorded in Los Angeles that Kim Fowley claims producer credit on - although he wasn't at the session - and which Gary Paxton produced.

Here are the two different versions, with the Boise slower version first and then the the sped-up version from Los Angeles. By the Way, Cashbox gave credit to the "young thrush" singing lead vocals, so they assumed it was a girl singing because of the pitch change.

TREAT HER RIGHT - Mark featured producer Huey P. Meaux in the second set, starting with Roy Head & The Traits with this huge hit. Here's a look at Roy doing it on Hollywood-A-Go-Go, followed by Mark's recording with Los Straitjackets.

BRIAN WILSON - Mark played his very first outside production, SURFER MOON by Bob & Shari. He'd produce it for The Beach Boys a little later, but in between, Bob took a new singing partner by the name of Vickie Kocher Later know as actress Victoria Hale), and they did a version called SUMMER MOON, backed by The Wrecking Crew, with Jan Berry arranging the strings and Brian adding some vocal parts. At the end of the session, Brian gave Vickie an acetate of the session. The original tapes were somehow lost, but fortunately, Vickie had saved her memento, it was transferred to digital for posterity, and thus the session still lives on. All three versions are below:

GUESS I'M DUMB - In the same set, Mark played this song and explained exactly how Glen Campbell came to sing it. Here's Glen performing it on Shindig. Bonus points: name the first dancer who comes into the scene at about 1:21!

BE A SOLDIER - In the final set, Mark played the Phil Spector production / Jack Nitzsche arrangement of Terry (Melcher) Day's second Columbia Records single, Be A Soldier.
