This Week's
"DEEP DIVE"
LOVE MUSIC
This weekend, we'll celebrate Valentine's Day a bit early,
because we can always use a bit more love in our lives...
because we can always use a bit more love in our lives...
LOVE MUSIC (The song) - Mark started the show with the Raiders' version of this Lambert-Potter tune released in 1972. We thought it might be interesting to hear a few versions of the song, in order of release...
LOVE MUSIC is one of 66 tracks included on The Raiders COMPLETE COLUMBIA SINGLES (with all B-sides) 3-CD set, out of print but still a few copies HERE, personally autographed to you.
BABY MY HEART - Mark played this tune by The Bobby Fuller Four in the fourth set, and described how, in addition to I FOUGHT THE LAW, it was borrowed from The Crickets. Here's an early version by those guys, featuring Raider Keith Allison's cousin Jerry, and another listen to the Bobby Fuller version.
ALL I REALLY NEED IS YOU - Mark opened the fifth set with this song from the Raiders' MIDNIGHT RIDE album, and described how he played sax and overdubbed trumpet with Drake Levin's guitar riff in the bridge of the tune. He also used the trumpet on Where The Action Is, so you might see it in one of the videos floating around. The trumpet actually dates from the 1964 Raiders and was also played by Mike Holladay on stage when he wasn't playing bass, and Mark still has it today (although not currently in playing condition and a little worse for wear.) Listen closely in the bridge!
THE BLOSSOMS - Mark ended Set with Darlene Love, who was in The Blossoms, and told the story of how they were on the background vocals on this Raiders' tune that he wrote and produced, DON'T TAKE IT SO HARD.
It's one of 66 tracks included on The Raiders COMPLETE COLUMBIA SINGLES (with all B-sides) 3-CD set, out of print but still a few copies HERE, personally autographed to you.
THE BIRDWATCHERS - Mark closed Set 8 with this group and I'M GONNA LOVE YOU ANYWAY. They were produced by fellow Where The Action Is member Steve Alaimo. Despite exposure on the show, they never achieved the success they had in the Tampa Bay area. This looks like the WTAI clip, and was most likely shot in Miami when the TV show music tour was in town. That's also the show where Mark, in full charm mode, tried to ingratiate himself with a local dancer by offering to get her into the show. She wouldn't give him the time of day, saying she had already been asked to audition as a WTAI dancer. But...that audition was canceled when she found out she was pregnant...and many decades later, Tim McGraw's mother and Mark met again at Fan Fair in Nashville and laughed about their encounter back then.
THAT'S ALL - Mark ended the show with this classic song from this BOOK OF LOVE project.
Guitars and Keys: Mike Fornatale
Bass: Jeremy Chatzky
Drums: Kurt Reil (The Grip Weeds)
It's available as a personally autographed CD HERE, or as part of a special set of 3 CDs (with FREE shipping) HERE, only through Valentine's Day.
He told the story of his Valentine's Day card left on the desk of Loma, a girl in his 9th grade class that he was too shy to approach. He signed the card "Lone Wolf" and she may never have known who it was from.
Mark and Loma and the other 9th-graders were on a school bus coming back from a football game in another town one night, when she casually mentioned to him...."You have a nice voice...maybe you should enter the school talent contest coming up?" Emboldened by that validation, he did (with a cover of Don't Be Cruel), and after winning first prize, decided maybe he was good enough to reach for the stars and pursue a music career. Had she not made that encouraging comment, who knows? Thanks, Loma, wherever you are...
Here's a sampler of the entire Book of Love...
