This Week's
"DEEP DIVE"
Let's Go To The Movies
This weekend, we'll feature songs used in motion pictures.

ONCE UPON A TIME IN HOLLYWOOD - Mark started the show with the Raiders' Mr Sun, Mr Moon, which Quentin Tarantino used (along with 3 other Raider tunes) in the movie. Here's a clip of the guys performing it on Happening. When Mark and Quentin did an event together after the movie was released, Quentin asked him about the dune buggy jump which Mark did for the show opening scene...the first one, where he was practicing and jumped over the wrong, much higher dune...and crash-landed on the nose of the buggy. Fortunately, only a few bumps and bruises...another guardian angel moment from the army he's had over the years.
![]() The ONCE UPON A TIME IN HOLLYWOOD soundtrack is available HERE. Mark was astonished to see that Quentin thanked him in the liner notes - the only musician mentioned.

WHAT THE WORLD NEEDS NOW - Between the second and third sets, Mark told the story of the Bob & Carol & Ted & Alice movie, and how Merrilee Rush's version of the Burt Bacharach-Hal David song came to be used on the soundtrack, instead of the Jackie DeShannon one used in the actual movie.
And here's another listen to Merrilee...
BOOGIE NIGHTS - Mark closed the third set with YOU SEXY THING from this film, loosely based on the tragic downfall of porn star John Holmes. John was somehow acquitted of four brutal murders that occurred at a house on Wonderland Avenue, just down the hill from Mark's. Mark and Paul had rented the very same house years before John and company moved in, and used it as a base for the Raiders' secretary Bunny, and for Paul to stay at when he came to LA from Boise.
Author Michael Connelly (of Bosch fame) has an excellent podcast series on the dark events that occurred at the house and John's involvement...more info and exerpts HERE.

There's also a book ("Malice In Wonderland") by the detectives who worked the case, Tom Lange (who you might remember from the OJ case) and Robert Souza, available HERE. It's an excellent companion piece to the podcast, and goes into more detail in a few places, such as Chuck Negron and his then-wife's association with the people who lived in the house (as Chuck mentions in HIS excellent book, Three Dog Nightmare.)

WHERE DO WE GO FROM HERE? - Mark opened Set 7 with the story of his appearance in Where Is The Chesterfield King?, and how it came to be. You can see more info on the DVD HERE.
Snd here's a listen to Mark and the boys doing the theme song. The cover of the 45 pictures them in and on the hearse Mark owned at the time.

HE'S MY GIRL - Mark ended the show with KICKS, used in this "screwball comedy" from 1987. The movie was heavily panned and is hard to find, but here's a compilation clip with a few scenes.
