This Week's
"DEEP DIVE"
Treads (and Threads)
This weekend, we'll feature songs that celebrate our personal adornments. Put on your tie-dye T-shirt and join us!
ALL DRESSED UP AND NO PLACE TO GO - Mark started today's first set with Willie Nile. Enjoy the video!

TOO MUCH TALK - Mark opened the fourth set with the album version of The Raiders' Too Much Talk, the first song he produced after taking over the reins from Terry Melcher. He talked about getting his boots custom-made by "shoemaker to the stars", Pasquale DiFabrizio (more about the shop HERE and HERE), including the ones of different colors that he wore in the Too Much Talk video that the Raiders filmed at the old Houdini estate. The house was in ruins at that time after a fire in 1959...more about the estate HERE. Mark also mentioned that DiFabrizio made the boots that Nancy Sinatra wore when she appeared in Playboy. (Of course, Mark had to play Nancy's THESE BOOTS ARE MADE FOR WALKIN' in the second set.)
And here's that colorful TMT video! (Note: don't adjust your sound - it's silent until Mark kicks open the gate.)

TOO MUCH TALK (and all of the Raiders' singles (both A and B sides) are available on the Complete Columbia Singles CD set. It contains an extensive liner note booklet and is out of print, but we have some in our stash, personally autographed to YOU, and available HERE.

DR GOLDFOOT AND THE BIKINI MACHINE - Also in the fourth set, Mark played one of the most unusual songs ever recorded by The Supremes, the theme song for this American International Pictures beach party movie from 1965.
BLUE SUEDE SHOES - Mark closed the fourth set with Elvis Presley's version of the song, and told the story of how Elvis wouldn't let RCA release it until his friend Carl Perkins' version was reaching the end of its shelf life as a hit. Here's Carl performing the song live on The Perry Como Show in 1956, and Elvis performing it that same year on The Milton Berle Show.
CHANTILLY LACE - Mark closed Set 5 with this classic by The Big Bopper, and talked about how he may have actually done the very first music video. You decide - here it is - it's simple, but has all the elements!
HATS OFF TO LARRY - Mark opened Set 6 with this song by Del Shannon, which was the followup to Runaway. Here's an early clip of Del doing that song.

VOGUE MAGAZINE - Between sets 6 and 7, Mark talked about a layout he did with Gloria Stavers, with the photo shoot done by Richard Avedon. This is one of the results of that session, with Mark wearing the white leather outfit he mentioned in the story.
CINDERELLA SUNSHINE - Mark ended the show with the album version of the song. Here's a video of the Raiders with that version of the song, and a very clever spoof produced by CR Films, using the single version.
