This Week's
"DEEP DIVE"
Women of Rock & Roll
This weekend, in honor of International Women's Day coming up this week on March 8th, we'll feature songs that celebrate the amazing talent of female songwriters and artists.
CYNTHIA WEIL - Mark started today's first set with the Raiders and Kicks, written by Cynthia Weil and Barry Mann. Mark spoke about Cynthia's achievements in music, but didn't have time to mention that she's also an author! You can find out more about her two novels HERE and HERE, and her children's book "Rockin' Babies" HERE. Of course, we can't finish this segment without a video of Kicks. this one is from The Milton Berle Show, where Mark sings live to a track of the song. |
CARLY SIMON - Mark closed the second set with Larry Raspberry's version of TIRED OF BEING BLONDE. John Mellancamp heard Larry performing it live, and got it to Carly Simon's "people", and here she is with a music video recorded for that release.
LAURA NYRO - Mark closed the third set with The Raiders' version of Save The Country. Mark produced the song as part of the COLLAGE album, which was released 53 years ago today. (Yikes.) Here's the Raiders, followed by Laura performing the song live.
PALMYRA DELRAN - Mark paid tribute to his fellow Underground Garage Turntable Mechanic with COME SPY WITH ME, out on Little Steven's Wicked Cool Records. We need to hear that one again!
CAROLE KING - Mark closed the show with his version of IT'S TOO LATE, one of two Carole King songs he recorded for his third solo album. Have a listen to both!
