This Week's
"DEEP DIVE"
ROLLING STONES TRIBUTE
This weekend, Mark will feature the best American music inspired by the Rolling Stones.
SATISFACTION - Mark opened the show with the Raiders' version of the song, and told the story of how they came to record it for their second Columbia album, JUST LIKE US. (By the way, you can get a personally autographed CD - now out of print - right HERE.) The Raiders were the 20th artist to record the song after the Stones. Mark also mentioned the Raiders' special promo flexi-disc of Satisfaction.
Mark played the Jerry Lee Lewis version at the end of the last set, and also closed the fourth set with the very first cover of the song, the version by Otis Redding. Who recorded the second cover? Dino Desi and Billy! |
LET'S SPEND THE NIGHT TOGETHER - Mark opened the second set with the Los Straitjackets version of the song. He also mentioned the Stones' performance of the song on the Ed Sullivan Show, where Ed insisted that the lyrics be changed to "Let's spend some time together." The Stones weren't happy, but complied, although Ed was REALLY not happy when they rolled their eyes during the changes. See for yourself!
RAIDERS AND STONES IN SEATTLE - DECEMBER 2, 1965 - Mark told the story of this show between the second and third sets. The Raiders were on right before The Stones, who closed the show, despite the memories of both Paul Revere and Phil Volk that the Raiders had closed it. See the review in the Seattle Times from the next day below.
Other acts on the bill included The Wailers, The Liverpool Five, Ian Whitcomb, Patty LaBelle and the Bluebells, The Ramrods, and The Vibrations.
RAIDERS AND STONES IN SAN FRANCISCO - MAY 14, 1965 - Mark told the story of this show between the third and fourth sets. The Raiders were on just before The Stones, who closed the show.
Other acts on the bill were The Beau Brummels, The Vejtables, The Mojo Men, and The Byrds.
RAIDERS AND STONES IN LONG BEACH - MAY 16, 1965 - Mark talked about this show in two parts, between the fifth and sixth, and sixth and seventh sets. The Raiders were on right before the Stones, and Mark described their harrowing escape from the arena, although it was even worse for the Stones.
The Raiders performed Money, Louie Louie, Do You Love Me, Ooh Poo Pah Doo, and Big Boy Pete. (Steppin' Out wouldn't be released until 8/16/65, and Just Like Me would be out 11/15/65.)
Other acts on the bill included the Dartells (from Oxnard), The Vibrants (the house band for the Cinnamon Cinder club), The Crickets (including future Raider Keith Allison), and The Byrds.
Mark talked to Randy Ray from The Dartells this past week, and they shared their memories of the gig, some of which Mark included on today's show. Randy also remembers thinking that The Dartells sounded pretty good - until The Stones came on. He said that his band sounded like they were playing through a transistor radio once he heard the Stones crank up their amps for their set!
The Dartell's manager Tom Ayers got them the gig, based on their 1962 hit HOT PASTRAMI. You can hear it below, and there's more on The Dartells HERE.

KRLA sponsored the concert, and devoted an issue of KRLA BEAT to it. The show ended in a riot, which the station kind of glossed over, but below are some local new reports of the incidents. You can see the whole issue of their teen newspaper HERE.
RAIDERS AND STONES IN PITTSBURGH - NOVEMBER 24, 1965 - Mark talked about this show between the seventh and eighth sets. Paul Revere has said the Raiders closed this show, and Mark shares the same memory, recalling an altercation between the promoter and Mick Jagger. The promoter told Mick that The Raiders were on Where The Action Is every day, and were bigger stars in Pittsburgh than the Stones at that time, and insisted that the Stones go on before them, despite Mick's "WHO THE F*** ARE THESE GUYS???!!!" protests. (Most of the acts were from a Dick Clark tour, so it makes sense that the promoter wanted to make Dick happy.) If things went down as Mark and Paul recall, no doubt the Stone's appearance contract immediately got revised to guarantee that they closed every show they played!
Other acts on the bill included The Results, Men of Action, Dale Wright and The Wright Guys, The Vibrations, Bo Diddley and The Duchess, We Five, and The Byrds. One report also says Simon & Garfunkel were there.

STREET FIGHTING MAN - The fifth set ended with the Chesterfield King's version of the song. Did you know that Andy Babuik followed up his Beatles Gear book with one on the Stones gear, written with Greg Prevost? More info HERE.

WILD HORSES - Mark closed the sixth set with the Leon Russell version of the song. If you haven't picked up the new Leon bio, which includes a mention of his tour as piano player for the Raiders - Mark highly recommends it - more info HERE.
