This Week's
"DEEP DIVE"
IT'S LOUIE, LOUIE TIME!
Celebrating the 60th Anniversary of the Portland, Oregon recording sessions of Louie, Louie
In April, 1963, two Portland bands went into a local studio and recorded the same song, one which would set the music world on fire. This weekend, Mark will tell the tale of Louie, Louie, as experienced from his little corner of the universe.
The Kingsmen recorded it first, and it was released in June on Jerden Records. The Raiders recorded it second, but got their record out first, on Sande Records.
As the record began to explode, the Raiders' master recording was leased to Columbia Records when they got signed to a contract, and The Kingsmen's was picked up by Wand.
Mark also discussed the FBI investigation into the "dirty lyrics", including the story of HIS deliberate use of the F word in the song during the guitar solo in the Raiders' version, and Lynn Easton's accidental use in the Kingsmen's version.
LOUIE LOUIE RELEASE ORDER - Of course, Richard Berry's was first, and the second was by Rockin' Robin Roberts, and that 45 was what both the Kingsmen and The Raiders learned the song from. The Raiders release was the third one, The Kingsmen were fourth, and the fifth was by I. Kadez, a studio singer for Nashville's Hit Records, which specialized in rushing out covers of hit records. And then, depending on the source you believe, it went on to be covered by anywhere from 1600 to over 5000 other artists, including The Beatles!
HAVE LOVE WILL TRAVEL - In between the third and fourth set, Mark told the story of meeting with Richard Berry at a bowling alley gig he was doing, to see if he had written a follow-up to LOUIE LOUIE. He handed Mark a copy of the sheet music to HAVE LOVE WILL TRAVEL. Although it wasn't the follow-up song Mark was really looking for, he liked it, and The Raiders recorded it on January 29, 1964, the very first cover of the song.
LOUIE, GO HOME - Mark opened the fifth set with this song, also recorded on January 29, 1964. He told the story of writing it when Richard Berry hadn't come up with a true LOUIE LOUIE follow-up. And then he told the stories of how both David Bowie and The Who came to record it, including the Pete Townsend mistaken writer credit resolution. Here's the Raiders lip-synching the song on Canadian TV, followed by David Bowie's and The Who's version. Attention R&R Hall of Fame re: Raiders' influence..... |
LOUIE, REVIENS CHEZ TOI - There was also a fourth version released in 1964 - by Ariane Et Les 10/20 - in French!
LOUIE GO HOME (ALTERNATE ARRANGEMENT) - Mark told the story of how this "breathy" version came to be released on the MIDNIGHT RIDE album. He also discussed a cover of the song by the A-Bones, with a picture sleeve spoofing The Raiders first HERE THEY COME album.
THE FABS - Mark opened the final set with this Fullerton, CA based band and DINAH WANTS RELIGION. Here's a poster from a local gig they played with The Seeds, sponsored by KRLA.
LOUIE LOUIE CONTINUED - As Mark said on the show, it's impossible to cover EVERYTHING about Richard Berry and Louie Louie in one two-hour show. Here are some excellent books about Richard, the song, and that era in the Northwest - including a new book by Peter Blecha titled after Mark's signature ad-lib phrase in Louie Louie, STOMP AND SHOUT.
Peter also wrote an earlier book on the subject, SONIC BOOM. And of course, there's the Dave Marsh book entirely devoted to Louie Louie. |
LOUIE LOUIE, LOUIE GO HOME, HAVE LOVE WILL TRAVEL - All of these early songs are included on this out of print 3-CD set containing ALL of the Raiders Columbia Records single releases - and you can get a copy personally autographed to you HERE. It also has a 24-page liner note booklet with interviews and recording notes.
