This Week's
"DEEP DIVE"
MONEY HONEY
Cha-CHING! It's tax prep weekend, so we're going to feature songs all about moolah...bread...coin...cheddar...dough...
Whatever you call it, we'll have it!
And Mark is also sharing the story of how the Raiders' producer Terry Melcher found out that everything his mom Doris Day had ever earned, was lost by her husband Marty Melcher and their "trusted" legal and accounting firm, Rosenthal & Green. And in the middle of rectifying THAT mess for her...
along comes Charles Manson into Terry's life.
ABOVE: Doris Day and her third husband Marty Melcher. Marty adopted Terry, who was the son of Doris' first husband, Al Jorden, and thus he became Terry Melcher.
They employed the services of the Beverly Hills legal and accounting firm Rosenthal & Green as their trusted legal advisors. And when Paul Revere and Mark Lindsay asked Terry Melcher about an accountant recommendation for their newly-successful group The Raiders, Terry pointed them to the same firm. They were in the big time, joining stars like Doris Day, Kirk Douglas, Zsa Zsa Gabor, Stanley Kubrick, George Hamilton, and Dorothy Dandridge.
Dorothy was a trailblazing Black singer and actress. After discovering in 1964 that Jerry Rosenthal had defrauded her of $150,000 AND saddled her with an IRS tax judgment of $139,000, she died the following year, with $2.14 in her bank account. A deliberate or accidental overdose of narcotics was the cause. But Doris, the Raiders, and Rosenthal's other clients were unaware of what happened, and Rosenthal had put THEM in the same oil and gas well scam investments that Dorothy had.

Mark told the story of Terry Melcher discovering the nightmare that Doris Day was in, after Marty Melcher suddenly died, and how he and Doris filed suit later that year to try to recover the $20 million that had disappeared. After 6 years of contentious litigation, they won the case, and it held up on appeal, although Doris only saw a fraction of the final award.
From the court opinion, in 1974:
From the court opinion, in 1974:
And to add salt to the wound, when Doris described the Rosenthal fiasco in her 1975 autobiography, her ex-"financial advisor" sued HER for $20 million, but it was soon thrown out of court. More info on the book HERE.
CHARLES MANSON - Few if any accounts of the Terry Melcher/Manson saga discuss the extremely stressful life that Terry was living after discovering in 1968 that his mother was for all intents and purposes bankrupt. And then the strange con-man / aspiring artist / retributionist came into his life during that period. Either scenario would have been difficult to handle, but the combination was almost deadly for Terry. He became a recluse for a while, was under a doctor's care, had a near-fatal motorcycle accident, and in Mark's opinion, never fully recovered from the events of that era.
WANDA JACKSON - Mark played her version of MONEY HONEY at the end of the fourth set. She dated Elvis for awhile, and since we're talking about "Clams" this weekend, let's watch Elvis in 1967's Clambake! It's a duet with actor Will Hutchins, who lip-synchs the vocals sung by Ray Walker from the Jordanaires.
MONEY FOR NOTHING - Since we only play music by American artists on the show, Mark pulled out a version of this song by Bertie Higgins. not Dire Straits, but not bad! Who's Bertie? The artist who did Key Largo!
