This Week's
"DEEP DIVE"
Rock A to Z (and Beyond)
AGENT DOUBLE-O-SOUL - Mark opened the show with the song that launched Edwin Starr's career. Here he is in 1965 on Hollywood-A-Go-Go. where host Sam Riddle kinda messes up the intro!
Mark mentioned that Billy Preston performed the song on TV a couple of times - here he is in 1965 on Shindig! (where he was part of the house band.) And then...there's that wild performance in 1967 on Ed Sullivan, backed by Ray Charles....
Is It True - Mark opened the second set with this song by Brenda Lee. It was written by John Carter and Ken Lewis, who also wrote Can't You Hear My Heartbeat for Herman's Hermits. She recorded the song in London with Mickie Most producing - the same guy who produced the Hermits. The Animals, Donovan, and Lulu. Here's Brenda performing it in 1964.
LOUISE and UNDECIDED MAN - Mark played the first song in Set 3, and the other one opened Set 6. Before playing UNDECIDED MAN, Mark told the autobiographical story of writing it up at the Cielo Drive house, and how a string quartet replaced the Raiders on the track. Both songs are on the expanded SPIRIT OF 67 CD, personally autographed to you HERE.
Here's a look at the Raiders on Where The Action Is.
MOVE ON UP - Mark played the edited single version of this Curtis Mayfield song to close out the third set, and mentioned that the album version was almost 9 minutes long. Let's have a listen to that one!
QUE SERA SERA - Mark closed the fourth set with Sly and The Family Stone's unusual version of the Doris Day classic, and told the story of how the crazy Hollywood rumor mill ran with a story that Doris and Sly, after being introduced by her son, producer Terry Melcher, were having a torrid love affair.
"Will Doris Day and Sly Stone Get Married?"
Sly even had to address the rumor on the Letterman Show.
SUMMER OF SORCERY - Mark played this Little Steven and the Disciples of Soul song to represent the letter "S". They just performed it at the Count Basie Theatre in New Jersey last week. How about that group photo?! (Danny Clinch, photographer)
YOU TOLD ME - This Monkees song represented the letter "U" in the Sixth Set.
1999: Mark chose this Prince song for "Beyond the A to Z" in the Seventh Set. Here's the official music video (of the shorter version of the song), and the full length version of the song.

2 KOOL 2 B 4-GOTTEN - Mark opened the final set with this Lucinda Williams song. Her new autobiography is getting rave reviews for its raw and honest tale of her life journey....more info HERE.
