This Week's
"DEEP DIVE"
ZOMBIE AWARENESS
Since May is Zombie Awareness Month,
it's a great weekend to listen to the best American Music
that influenced - and was influenced BY -
Rock and Roll Hall of Famers, The Zombies.
(But first, a little light-hearted Zombie Stuff)
I WALKED WITH A ZOMBIE - Mark opened the show with this Roky Erickson (from the 13th Floor Elevators) tune. Listen to the same percussive intro that's on Be My Baby! (And that's why this week's Ed Sheeran decision is so important - more on that HERE.)
And...here's the trailer for the 1943 movie of the same name...
Road Runner - Mark opened the first set with this 2004 version by Aerosmith, originally recorded by Bo Diddley in 1960, and covered by The Zombies in April 1965.
By the Way, Aerosmith just announced their Farewell Tour, and the promo reel is pretty cool...
YOU MUST BELIEVE ME - Mark closed the first set with The Impressions original 1964 recording, and The Zombies performed it on their BBC sessions soon after. Here are both versions:
LEAVE ME BE - The Zombies recorded their original song in October 1964, and in the second set, Mark played the Sonny & Cher version from two years later.
I LOVE YOU - Mark closed the second set with People's hit version of the song, from 1968. The Zombies were disappointed that, despite releasing it twice, they never were able to chart with their original recording from 1965. Here's People with their promo video, followed by The Zombies version. And as a special treat, here's The Grip Weeds with their take on the song.
CARE OF CELL #44 - Mark closed the fourth set with the 2006 Matthew Sweet and Susanna Hoffs' version of the Zombies original from 1967. Trivia: Did you know that Susanna covered The Raiders' HIM OR ME last year?
WHAT BECOMES OF THE BROKENHEARTED - Mark opened Set 6 with the new Bruce Springsteen version of the Isley Brother's 1966 song. The Zombies played it at the concert series that became the 40th Anniversary Odessey & Oracle (Revisited) album.
WOMAN - In the seventh set, Mark played Neal Ford and The Fanatics' 1966 version of the Zombies' 1964 original. More info on this Houston artist HERE.
IF YOU COULD READ MY MIND: At The close of the show, Mark paid tribute to Gordon Lightfoot, who passed away this week, by playing this song from his third solo album.
