This Week's
"DEEP DIVE"
SPINNING THE ROCK & ROLL COMPASS
This week, we'll visit the musical hotbeds, region by region...
BALLAD OF A USELESS MAN - Mark opened the show in the WEST with this Raiders song from the 1966 Midnight Ride album. In the 1990's, on a quest for lost early Raider material, he discovered a tape in Boise containing 4 demos done by Drake Levin. Here's the Terry Melcher-produced version, and Drake's original rockabilly version.
ARGENTINA - Mark started the first WEST set with this former "Coolest Song in The World" by The Bayonets and Brian Ray...
THE REV-LONS - Mark closed the second set with this Gary Paxton-produced group from Bakersfield. And he also told the story of avoiding a fight at the Blackbird Cafe after he danced there with Bobby Bare's girl. Here's the scene of the crime, where Buck Owens got his start, and a photo of the man he almost did wrong, Bobby Bare...
Here's another one of The Rev-Lons' tunes released on his GarPax label...
DON'T BE CRUEL - Mark chose this Cheap Trick take on the Elvis hit to represent the MIDWEST in the fifth set.
SOUL POWER TWIST - Mark played this Little Steven and the Disciples of Soul song as one of the representatives of the NorthEast sound.
ANNA - Mark opened the seventh set in the SOUTH with Alabama's Arthur Alexander, the artist who wrote this song covered by The Beatles. Arthur wrote songs covered by the Stones, Dylan, The Hollies, George Jones, and more. He also wrote EVERY DAY I HAVE TO CRY, first recorded by Where The Action Is artist Steve Alaimo in 1962.
Here's Arthur with the original ANNA, and Steve performing on an episode of George Klein's Dance Party, a local Memphis TV show, when he was on tour with the Raiders there in 1967.

CLUB DEAD: At The close of the show, Mark played a song that he wrote up in Idaho after hearing about the passing of Kurt Cobain and told the story of how it came to be. He recorded it in Los Angeles for his 1996 VIDEO DREAMS CD, available HERE, personally autographed to YOU.
Here's TOKYO BLUES, another song on that album.
