This Week's
"DEEP DIVE"
IN THE WATER
This week, we're celebrating National Fishing and Boating Week,
so in the water we go!
SLOOP JOHN B - Mark played this Beach Boys classic in the first set, and mentioned this film they made for Top of The Pops, filmed at Brian Wilson's house, directed by publicist Derek Taylor (who was also the Raiders PR man and is in the film), and shot by Dennis Wilson.
SEA CRUISE - Mark played this Frankie Ford hit in the third set, and told the story of how Huey "Piano" Smith's vocal was replaced by Frankies, due to the problems in that era of getting "Race Music" played on radio. Here's Frankie appearing on Dick Clark's Saturday Night Beechnut Show on March 21, 1959. The show was broadcast on ABC from 1958-1960. (American Bandstand had begun its daily stint on the network beginning on August 5, 1957.)
This is the original version of the song with Huey (and Gerri Hall) on lead vocal, followed by a mashup of Huey's and Frankie's together.
ANCHORS UP - Mark included this Underground Garage's "Coolest Song of The Week" in set four, from Maine's Kurt Baker.
SWIM - Mark closed set four with the Raiders, and a song recorded in May 1964. (Mark, Paul, Drake, Smitty, and Mike Holladay.) It was released that year as the B side of Over You, and Mark told the story of a plan their manager cooked up just in case they got dropped from the label - since they hadn't cracked the Top 100 with their first three singles, proving to Mitch Miller that he was correct in hating rock and roll music.
The song is on this out of print 3-CD set with an extensive liner note booklet...available HERE, personally autographed to you by Mark Lindsay.
DIRTY WATER - Mark closed the final set with Bruce Springsteen and the E-Street Band bringing the house down in Boston on March 20, 2023 when they played this hometown favorite. Mark talked about the retrospective nature of Bruce's comments in Tampa, where the tour kicked off: "At 73, there are a lot of goodbyes, and that's why you have to make the most of right now." The words took on a deeper meaning for Mark after he finished recording the show this week, since he was saddened to hear that his friend and the lyricist behind the two of the Raiders biggest hits, CYNTHIA WEIL, had just passed away.
A PIRATE LOOKS AT 40 - Continuing the retrospective thread, Mark ended the show with this Jimmy Buffet tune from 1975, where Jimmy looks back on his life and contemplates the future.
