This Week's
"DEEP DIVE"
A TRIBUTE TO CYNTHIA WEIL
This week, we're celebrating the life of the iconic songwriter,
whose lyrics had such an impact on the world of music
SHAPE OF THINGS TO COME - Mark played this Raider tune to open the first set. It was one of six songs that Cynthia co-wrote with Barry Man for the cult classic movie, WILD IN THE STREETS in 1968. The studio group The 13th Power/Max Frost & The Troopers performed it in the movie and on the soundtrack, and the Raiders' released their version on the Indian Reservation album in 1971. You can get the WILD IN THE STREETS DVD HERE, or the soundtrack CD HERE.
MAMACITA - Mark opened the second set with this Mann-Weil tune, as performed by the Grass Roots. Mark recorded his version in Vancouver, Canada, and it was released without any promotion in 1975, when Dunhill released the Roots' version. It's available on Mark's Complete Columbia Singles CD, available personally autographed to you HERE.
Let's have a Battle of the Bands!
HUNGRY (PREVIOUSLY CENSORED VERSION) - Mark included this Mann-Weil bonus track from the Spirit of '67 CD in set 5, which he and Bob Irwin (from Sundazed) discovered in the Columbia vaults more than 3 decades after Mark had been told the version was "accidentally erased". It's available HERE, personally autographed to YOU.
I'M SATISFIED - Mark closed set five with Lou Rawls and and the theme from the James Coburn movie Duffy. a song written by Barry Mann, Cynthia Weil, and Ernie Freeman.
ON BROADWAY - Mark opened set six with this iconic Mann-Weil-Lieber-Stoller song, but with a version recorded early in Sly Stone's career on Autumn Records. More info HERE.
SWEET FREEDOM - Steven Van Zandt spearheaded a new Darlene Love project in 2015, and selected songs from notable songwriters to produce her on. Cynthia Weil and Barry Mann contributed this one. The CD is available HERE.
BROWN EYED WOMAN - Mark closed the seventh set with this Bill Medley song that was popular on both coasts, but was met with resistance in the South and Midwest due to its "controversial" lyrics. Here's Bill performing the song on Playboy After Dark in August 1968, backed by The Blossoms.
HOME OF THE BRAVE - Mark opened the last set with the Bonnie and The Treasures' version of the Mann-Weil song, and here they are performing it on Where The Action Is on October 8, 1965. The song was based on a true story and was also recorded by Jody Miller, an artist that the Raiders backed up at a string of San Francisco gigs in the VERY early days.
YOU'VE LOST THAT LOVIN' FEELING - Mark closed the final set with this Mann-Weil-Spector classic, from the LOVE IS STRANGE duet album that he recorded with Susan Cowsill. It's available HERE, signed by both artists, and personally autographed to YOU by Mark.
DON'T KNOW MUCH - Mark ended the show with a final remembrance to Cynthia, who passed away on June 1st. Some of Cynthia's many accomplishments are HERE on her Songwriters' Hall of fame page. And the last song Mark played today was sung by her husband Barry Mann, and written by Cynthia with him and Tony Snow.
