This Week's
"DEEP DIVE"
HERE COMES SUMMER
This week, we're celebrating the first official weekend of summer - so grab your umbrella drink, put your toes in the sand, and join Mark!
HERE COMES SUMMER - Mark opened the show with this 1964 song by Bruce Johnston and Terry Melcher. Jerry Keller had the hit with it in 1959, and The Dave Clark Five recorded a version in 1970.
JEANNIE'S BIKINI - What would summer be without bikinis? Mark played this vintage Dick Glasser tune in the first set.
ACTION - Mark closed the first set with the Raiders' version of the theme from Where The Action Is, where it was ALWAYS Summer. It's on the JUST LIKE US album, which is available on an out of print CD that includes 3 bonus tracks: the previously unreleased RIDE YOUR PONY, an alternate mix of JUST LIKE ME, and BFDRF BLUES (previously only on 45). You can get a copy personally autographed to YOU...HERE.
KEEPIN' THE SUMMER ALIVE - Mark included this song from Jeffrey Foskett's Thru My Window CD. More info and streaming HERE. Reviews call it "the best Beach Boys album they never recorded." You can listen to the title track below.
QUEEN OF THE BEACH - Long before Carole King's TAPESTRY, there was this song. Mark included it in the fourth set.
HEY BABRO - Yes, the song is autobiographical. Mark told the story of meeting such a Swedish goddess on the beach of Waikiki in the summer of 1965.
IN THE SUMMER - Mark closed the final set with this Jesse Malin tune.
Mark then told the story of Jesse's life-altering experience this past May, when a rare spinal stroke rendered him paralyzed below the waist. Mark has been donating the proceeds from the CD he did with Los Straitjackets to help Jesse out, but this week, he came across an unexpected "gift" in the form of a piece of memorabilia that isn't quite what it seems to be. So we've set up an auction on Mark's website, with all the proceeds going to Jesse's recovery fund at SWEET RELIEF. Details on the "Award" auction HERE, and the Sing Along With Los Straitjackets CD HERE. And/or you can help Jesse out with a donation directly to Sweet Relief at the link above. THANK YOU.
