This Week's
"DEEP DIVE"
INDEPENDENCE DAY
This week, we're celebrating the Fourth of July...
with a very REVOLUTIONARY show
FOURTH OF JULY - Mark opened the show with this new song by Steve Conte (ex-New York Dolls), which he co-wrote with XTC's Andy Partridge. The vinyl will be available in late summer, but you can stream it or download it now. Info HERE.
Andy Partridge also wrote YOU BRING THE SUMMER, which the Monkees recorded for their 2016 GOOD TIMES! album.
HIM OR ME - Mark opened the first set with the Raiders and this Lindsay-Melcher song, from the appropriately-named REVOLUTION album. It charted at #5 on the Billboard Hot 100, and on this Canada Day, we're proud to say it reached #2 on that country's RPM Top Singles chart. The music weekly's June 10, 1967 issue showed it was being held out of the top slot by The Mama's and Papas with CREEQUE ALLEY. This issue also had a review of the GREATEST HITS album, and a mention that the Raiders were re-organizing.
Here's a clip of the Raiders lip-synching the song on George Klein's Talent Party weekly TV show from Memphis. Mark helped rescue the tape from a dumpster after WHBQ tossed all the media.
REAL AMERICAN - Mark opened the second set with this Rick Derringer song, from The Wrestling Album, a 1985 collection of WWF theme songs and walk-on music for their wrestlers. The duo the song was originally intended for left the WWF for a rival organization, so it (fortuitously) ended up as the theme for mega-star Hulk Hogan. Here's Hulk "playing" the song.
NANCY SINATRA - Mark chose this Bottle Rockets' song for the opening of the third set. He absolutely loves the groove...
REVOLUTION - Mark closed set four with a cover of this Beatles song, featuring Billy F. Gibbons, from the Butchering The Beatles tribute album. It also includes Gregg Bissonette, the drummer from Ringo's band and also the drummer on Mark's upcoming project.
GENUINE AMERICAN GIRL - Mark closed the fifth set with this Alice Cooper tune. Leave it Alice to go all out...
I AM A PATRIOT - Perfect for the occasion, Mark closed set six with Stevie Van Zandt and the Disciples of Soul.
BACK IN THE USA - Mark promised the video for this Green Day song he played to open the last set. Enjoy!
MISS AMERICA - Mark closed the show with his third Columbia single, which charted at #44 in 1970. It's available personally autographed to YOU (along with 23 other songs, including the previously unreleased REASON TO BELIEVE), right HERE.
JESSE MALIN BENEFIT AUCTION
ENDS SATURDAY, JULY 8th!
Last week, Mark told the story of musician Jesse Malin's life-altering experience this past May, when a rare spinal stroke rendered him paralyzed below the waist. Mark has been donating the proceeds from the CD he did with Los Straitjackets to help Jesse out, but last week, he came across an unexpected "gift" in the form of a piece of memorabilia that isn't quite what it seems to be. So we've set up an auction on Mark's website, with all the proceeds going to Jesse's recovery fund at SWEET RELIEF. Details on the "Award" auction HERE, and the Sing Along With Los Straitjackets CD HERE. And/or you can help Jesse out with a donation directly to Sweet Relief at the link above. THANK YOU.
