CULINARY DELIGHTS
This week, we're tickling your aural taste buds
with some delicious American music!

HUNGRY FOR SOME LOVIN' - Mark opened the show with this Raider song from the raiders' Country Wine album, and told the story of its songwriter, Bob Siller.

HOORAY FOR BEER  - Mark opened the second set with the Bowling For Soup, thus double-dipping on today's theme!

HUNGRY HEART - Mark chose a version by Jesse Malin to represent this Springsteen classic in the third set. Please see below to find out how you can help Jesse out following his medical emergency this Spring.

VIOLET CRUMBLE, CHERRY RIPE - Mark played this Fleshtones song to open Set 4, and talked about how the title actually derived from two different Australian candy bars. Mark had an Australian girlfriend for awhile, so he was familiar with them!

THROW YOUR DOG A BONE - Not one to forget the culinary delights for the critters, Mark included this Genya Ravan tune in the fourth set.

HUNGRY - Mark has played the Raiders' versions of the song recently on the show, so for set 5, he chose one by ex-Maui neighbor Sammy Hagar to represent the Mann-Weil song.

CHERRY CHERRY - Mark opened the last set with Neil Diamond and talked about its connection to Artie Butler, whom most of you know for the arrangements he did for Mark's solo recordings as well as the Raiders. (And of course, he's the guy who came up with, and played, the distinctive organ riff at the end of INDIAN RESERVATION.)

Here's Neil performing the song live on The Late Show in 1996, with Paul Shaffer SMOKIN' on the organ!

COUNTRY WINE - Mark closed the show with this #51 Raider single from 1972, and told the story of its songwriters, Ed Villareal and Wanda Watkins.

JESSE MALIN BENEFIT AUCTION
ENDS SATURDAY, JULY 8th at 8PM ET!

Two weeks ago, Mark told the story of musician Jesse Malin's life-altering experience this past May, when a rare spinal stroke rendered him paralyzed below the waist. Mark has been donating the proceeds from the CD he did with Los Straitjackets to help Jesse out, but last week, he came across an unexpected "gift" in the form of a piece of memorabilia that isn't quite what it seems to be. So we've set up an auction on Mark's website, with all the proceeds going to Jesse's recovery fund at SWEET RELIEF. Details on the "Award" auction HERE, and the Sing Along With Los Straitjackets CD HERE. And/or you can help Jesse out with a donation directly to Sweet Relief at the link above. THANK YOU.
