This Week's
"DEEP DIVE"
DOUBLE OR NOTHING
This week, we're playing the American music with two words in the title,
by artists with 2 words in the name
JUST SEVENTEEN - started the show with this Raider song from the Collage album, the first release following Mark and Paul's directive to use "The Raiders" instead of "Paul Revere & The Raiders" for all future recordings. Above is a clip from Billboard, November 14, 1970....but the name change actually occurred in November 1969.
JUST SEVENTEEN features what sounds like a double guitar part, but it's actually guitar (played by Louie Shelton) plus soprano sax (played by John d'Andrea, who also arranged the horn section.) That's Joe Correro, Jr on drums.
Although COLLAGE is out of print, JUST SEVENTEEN is available on the Raiders' COMPLETE COLUMBIA SINGLES
3-CD set. It's also out of print, but we have some copies HERE, personally autographed to YOU by Mark Lindsay.
CAVALRY CAPTAIN - Mark closed the third set with The Decemberists, from Portland, Oregon, and talked about lead singer/songwriter Colin Meloy's clever marketing video for the band, seen in the video below. When it was originally released, it featured a number you could call...which resulted in sending a text to your phone with a link to The Decemberists' website.
DRUMMER MAN - The fourth set opened with Nancy Sinatra...and Wrecking Crew member Hal Blaine.
WICHITA LINEMAN - Mark featured The Meters as the openers of set six, with their light-funk version of the Glen Campbell hit, and told the story of how Glen actually put it out in what songwriter Jimmy Webb had told him was not quite finished form, missing a third verse and a middle eight that he'd planned to add. Here are both versions (including Glen's original 1969 promo film) - as well as one by Jimmy himself.
SHY BOY - The seventh set closed with Mark's fellow Underground Garage Turntable Mechanic, Palmyra Delran. Her Trash Pop Treasures Show precedes American Revolution on the weekends.
DR FINE - Mark closed the show with another song from the first "name change" album, COLLAGE, and described himself as "vocally schizophrenic" for recording DR FINE and ARIZONA in the same week!
