This Week's
"DEEP DIVE"
SUMP'N ELSE
This week, Mark will feature this daily Dallas Teen TV show, which aired from
9/7/65 through 1/26/68, and was hosted by Ron Chapman.
It included dancing, interviews, rate-a-record,
and live appearances from both local and national bands.
We're playing the artists who appeared on the show,
with the songs they performed.
JUST LIKE ME - Mark started the show with this Raider song from the JUST LIKE US album, since it was one of the songs the band played when they performed on SUMP'N ELSE on January 31, 1966. We bought out the final run of this CD and have a limited number available, personally autographed to you, available HERE. THE CD contains bonus tracks not included on the original vinyl release.
BABY PLEASE DON'T GO - Mark started the first set with Colorado's The Moonrakers, who performed the song on SUMP'N ELSE on 6/17/66.
IF I NEEDED SOMEONE - A local band called Stykz and Stonz performed the song on SUMP'N ELSE on 10/13/66, but never released it commercially. So Mark opened the second set with The Kingsmen and THEIR very un-Kingsmen-like version of the song. They appeared on the show on 9/10/65 and performed ANNIE FANNY, but below is a live clip of them doing the Beatles tune on another show.
ELVIRA - Mark closed the third set with the guy who wrote the song and performed it on SUMP'N ELSE on 3/20/66. Dallas was also the guy who wrote Alley-Oop, and Mark met him (and other songwriters, like Richard Berry, who were pitching tunes to Gary) when he was hanging out with Gary Paxton in Hollywood in the early days. Here's Dallas doing Elvira live and unplugged.
A PUBLIC EXECUTION - Mouse and The Traps performed this tune on SUMP'N ELSE on 1/28/66, and Mark included it in the fifth set.
THE LITTLE GROUP - SUMP'N ELSE had its own group of "star go-go dancers" that were known by this name. A local girl named Patsy McClenny was a frequent audience dancer on the show, and tried out for The Little Group three times, but was turned down each time....not because she wasn't good, but because she exuded a maturity and voluptuousness that wasn't "teen-like." You know her better by the stage name she took later...MORGAN FAIRCHILD.
IT'S ALL OVER NOW BUT THE CRYING - Mark opened the sixth set with this song by the Texas band The Brimstones, which they performed on SUMP'N ELSE on 1/31/67.
THE FIVE AMERICANS - Mark opened the seventh set with this band and their version of ROLL OVER BEETHOVEN, which they performed on SUMP'N ELSE on 6/20/66. On 2/9/67, they did WESTERN UNION on the show, and that's one of the few tapes from the show that are known to exist. Here's a rare look at the SUMP'N ELSE...
THE GREAT AIRPLANE STRIKE - Mark closed the show with this song, since he and the Raiders performed it on the second anniversary of SUMP'N ELSE. That show was a 2-hour special, and featured the Raiders doing NINE songs. Although it appears that the video was taped over, we think that at least some of the audio exists...and Mark's hopeful that 2 live vs lip-synched audio performances might exist. The quest continues!
Mark thought the "wind-down ending" of the song was a perfect way to signify SUMP'N ELSE coming to a close on 1/26/68.
It's available HERE on the out-of-print 3-CD set, personally autographed to you by Mark.
