This Week's
"DEEP DIVE"
CALIFORNIA CONNECTION
This weekend is the anniversary of the state of California
joining the Union in 1850,
so we'll mark the event with two hours of the best American music
with a California connection.
CALIFORNIA SOUL - Mark opened the show with the Marlena Shaw and her 1969 version of the song. It was originally recorded by The Messengers in 1967, and then by one of its co-writers, Nick Ashford, in 1968. The Fifth Dimension followed with their big hit three months later.
Below are all four versions - pick your favorite!

I'LL BE DOGGONE - Mark opened the first set with The Raiders and a song from their JUST LIKE US! album. They played it on Where The Action Is, and it was recorded at CBS Studio A in Hollywood.
Terry Melcher, who produced the album, selected it because it was a song from the Raiders' live show repertoire, and they were already familiar with it, so the studio time to record it would be minimal.
The JUST LIKE US! CD (with bonus tracks) is out of print, but we have a few left in Mark's store, available personally autographed to you HERE.
DOLEMITE - Mark closed the first set with Rudy Ray Moore's theme song from the movie, and he told the story of this cult classic Blaxploitation film, which was one of Quentin Tarantino's many influences. The film is available (but not shareable) on YouTube because of its NSFW rating...just search for it.
Neflix later produced a movie starring Eddie Murphy as Rudy Ray Moore/Dolemite.
