This Week's
"DEEP DIVE"
SHINDIG!
This weekend is the anniversary of the debut
of one of the iconic music shows of the 60s.
SHINDIG hit the TV airwaves for the very first time on September 16, 1964.
Join us for two hours of the best American music
that was featured on the show.
SLOW DOWN - Mark opened the show with The Walker Brothers (John Maus and Scott Engel as a duo) and their fabulous pompadours! John is playing the Fender Esquire that he later sold to Jeff Beck for 75 pounds. Here's more info on, and a great photo of, what was called "THE UGLIEST GUITAR".
LITTLE HONDA - Mark included this song in the second set. Can you pick out Teri Garr in the video? She was one of the SHINDIG dancers.
WHO DO YOU THINK YOU ARE? - Mark closed the first set with this song by The house band for Shindig, The Shindogs. It was written by Delaney Bramlett and Joey Cooper, and produced by Leon Russell. Glen Campbell is singing the low parts.
RAQUEL WELCH AND BORIS KARLOFF - Mark mentioned that SHINDIG added more non-music celebrities in the second season, including Raquel singing Dancin' In The Street and Boris reciting Peppermint Twist. And here are those magic moments...(you'll need to follow the link to see Raquel directly on YouTube)
SHINDIG IN HAWAII - Between the third and fourth sets, Mark talked about the two episodes that SHINDIG filmed in Hawaii, and here they are! (Make SURE you see Billy Preston singing - and dancing to - AIN'T THAT PECULIAR on the first Hawaii episode.)
THE DOCTOR GOLDFOOT SPECIAL - Mark talked about this bizarre SHINDIG special in between the fourth and fifth sets....and how the same ABC censors who yelled at him about the way his belt hung down on WHERE THE ACTION IS...but thought this was cool for kids. SMH!
(GET YOUR KICKS ON) ROUTE 66 - Mark closed the first set with George Maharis performing this song from the TV show of the same name.
HOW MANY MORE YEARS? - Mark closed the second set with the song that Howlin' Wolf performed on SHINDIG after the Rolling stones insisted that they wouldn't go on the show unless they booked Wolf.
SATISFACTION - Mark closed the show with The Raiders and a song from their JUST LIKE US! album. As Mark revealed, the Raiders never appeared on SHINDIG, which is remarkable since they appeared on almost every network TV show that booked music acts, for a combined total between the Raiders and Mark as a solo artist of more than 800 network shows.
Mark thinks that SATISFACTION would have been one of the songs they WOULD have performed on SHINDIG, since the show always featured artists doing popular covers of other artists' current hits.
Like other covers on that album, producer Terry Melcher felt that since the Raiders were familiar with the songs from playing them night after night on live gigs, the recording process would be faster than if he selected other songs for them.
The JUST LIKE US! CD (with bonus tracks) is out of print, but we have a few left in Mark's store, available personally autographed to you HERE.
