SONGS OF SEPTEMBER
This weekend, to celebrate the Autumnal Equinox,
we'll play two hours of the best American music
that was recorded, released, or charted over the years...in September.

SEPTEMBER - Mark opened the show with Earth Wind and Fire and the song that most signifies that month, and told the story of the nonsensical - but essential - lyrics. Get your groove on - and Ba-De-Ya!

STEPPIN' OUT - Mark opened the first set with this song, and told the story of writing it song while living on his grandparents' farm. The song entered the Hot 100 at #83 on September 18, 1965, and was on the Raiders' JUST LIKE US album, available personally autographed to you, HERE.

And here's the Raiders, with Mark singing LIVE to a pre-recorded track, on Hullabaloo.

WAKE ME UP WHEN SEPTEMBER ENDS - Mark opened the second set with this song by Green Day.

LIAR, LIAR - Mark played this Castaways tune in the second set, and here they are performing it in the movie "It's a Bikini World."

AGENT DOUBLE-O-SOUL - Mark played this Edwin Starr tune in the third set, and here he is performing it on Hollywood-A-Go-Go. Note the botched intro!

HELP! - Mark closed the third set with this Tina Turner rendition of the Beatles' classic movie theme.

WE GOTTA ALL GET TOGETHER - Mark closed the fourth set with this 1969 Raider single, penned by Freddy Weller, and told the story of how it was/wasn't part of a low-budget (and impossible to find) movie with Mike/Sylvester Stallone - originally called "That Nice Boy" and later changed to "The Square Root." It was his very first film...where he plays a photographer documenting an LSD-themed beach party in Miami. Knowing that's the theme that the song was intended to be used for, doesn't that give more meaning to the lyrics? You'll need to listen to the fifth voice break of the show for the whole story!

HONKY TONK WOMAN - Mark opened the fifth set with the Meters and their version of the Stones' hit.

SEPTEMBER SONG - Mark closed the show with Willie Nelson's version of this standard.

NOTHING BUT HEARTACHES - Mark opened the sixth set with the Supremes, and the song that prompted the Berry Gordy staff memo that Mark read on the air.

He wore it every night on the Happy Together Tour that summer, and it's available with a selection of photos from that evening, in our shop.
