This Week's
"DEEP DIVE"
SONGWRITERS
This weekend, Mark will feature
two hours of the best American music,
focusing on the creations of nine different songwriters
or songwriting teams.
SOMETHING BIG - Mark opened the show with this Burt Bacharach-Hal David song, which he sang in the Dean Martin movie of that name. Mark went up to Burt's house to practice the song with him, and then Burt came to the studio to listen to the session. He really liked the way Mark set up the microphones on the piano, and decided to play it on the session, instead of the musician who'd been called for the job. Here's Mark's version of the song, followed by the one Burt recorded himself a little later.

BEING FOR THE BENEFIT OF MR. KITE - Mark closed the first set, devoted to Lennon-McCartney songs, with the Cheap Trick version of this song. John says that he based the lyrics on a poster he'd purchased in an antique store in Kent.
GYPSY WOMAN - Mark opened the second set, devoted to the songs written by Curtis Mayfield, with this song recorded first by his group, The Impressions. It was then recorded by Brian Hyland, with Del Shannon producing.

BOB DYLAN - Mark featured this iconic singer-songwriter in the third set, and told the story of Bob performing recently in an unannounced show with The Heartbreakers at Farm Aid.

GOOD THING - Mark played the Sandy Nelson version of this Lindsay-Melcher song under his voice to introduce the segment devoted to songs the team wrote, and talked about meeting Sandy in the studio in 1961.

Mark told the story of how he and Terry wrote Good Thing on the baby grand at the house they shared on Cielo Drive, and that claims that there was a third songwriter are false.
Decades after the song was released, Raider Phil Volk claimed that he co-wrote the song, and spread that "news" in various interviews and social media posts. Phil DID write two songs on the Spirit of 67 album, and signed songwriting contracts at that time with Terry's Daywin Music, which published the song. Had he actually written any part of Good Thing, he would have asked where that contract was, and certainly would have spoken up when his name was not on the Good Thing songwriting credits on the 45 or the album. Further, after Phil left the Raiders in April 1967 and was sued by both the Raiders' production company (Paul and Mark) and Columbia Records, he retained an attorney, but never made any claims at that time that he had been cheated out of the song.
Decades after the song was released, Phil suddenly claimed to have co-written the song, and said that he broached the issue with Terry Melcher's publishing company, but they refused to change anything. Phil has also claimed that he asked Mark for help in getting songwriting credit, but to this date he has never even mentioned the subject to Mark.
Terry and Mark wrote Good Thing, and that's the true story.
(YOU'RE A) BAD GIRL - Mark opened the fourth set with this previously unreleased song, the B side of a red vinyl 45 put out by Sundazed in 2012 for Record Store Day. Limited quantities of the 45, personally autographed to you, are available HERE.

MO'REEN - Mark closed the Lindsay-Melcher set with a version by Louisiana's Danny & Jerry. Did you know that the Raiders released a Spanish version in Europe?

MAYBE I KNOW - Mark closed the fifth set, devoted to the songwriting team of Jeff Barry and Ellie Greenwich, with Leslie Gore and Maybe I Know. Here's a mashup of Leslie performing the song on the TAMI and Steve Allen Shows.

GAMBLE & HUFF - Set seven included the songs of Philly's Gamble & Huff songwriting team, and Mark only had time to play four songs from their vast 3000+ song catalog. Here's another one!

UPS AND DOWNS - Mark closed the show with a "still-in-the-vaults-but-he's-working-on-getting-it-out" version of the Lindsay-Melcher song. It was originally planned as the single (hence it's why Mark sang live to that track on the Smothers' Brothers show, below), but Paul Revere objected to the elaborate arrangement with horns, since they couldn't reproduce it on stage without bringing a horn section on tour. So this (better, and more passionate, in Mark's opinion) version was shelved and it was re-recorded. That version became the single.
