This Week's
"DEEP DIVE"
ALL TRICKS, NO TREATS
This weekend, Mark will feature
songs suitable for your Halloween nightmares...
But first, which of these WASN'T Mark on Halloween?...
"Cowboy - definitely, several times over the years. My father was convinced he should have been a cowboy...settled for being a mountain man. We always watched Westerns and I had full cowboy regalia, including a cap gun.
Arab sheik - one year my mother was on a multi-cultural bend...My sister was a princess from India with sari, etc...I was a sheik with wooden scimitar. We must have had sheets ready for upcycling that year.
Pilot - absolutely with photo proof. Here I am in my pilot helmet (probably a snowsuit hat) and military shirt; Naomi is in her WAC uniform. Our father was still in the Army...probably taken Halloween 1944.
Pirate - surprisingly, no!"

THRILLER - Mark opened the show with this Michael Jackson monster hit, produced by Quincy Jones.

RAIDERS' HEARSE - Mark talked about the band "car" he bought in Portland in 1962, and here's the proof! Raiders' guitarist Steve West took this in front of his house.

HOWLIN' FOR YOU - Mark opened the second set with The Black Keys...

MONSTER MASH - Mark opened the third set with a song that Leon Russell was supposed to play on - but he was late for the session, and ended up playing on the B side, Monster Mash Party. Mark told the story of how Bobby "Boris" Pickett wrote the song, and how early Raiders' producer Gary Paxton came to produce the song. Bobby performed it on American Bandstand, and Boris Karloff then sang it on the Shindig Halloween special.

VAMPIRA - Mark closed the fourth set with this Bobby Bare song, and told the scary story of nearly getting beaten up in a Bakersfield bar in 1961 after dancing with "Bobby's girl."

MUNSTER CREEP - Mark closed the fifth set with "The Munsters" - who actually consisted of The Wrecking Crew (including Leon Russell and Glen Campbell), with vocals by the early L.A. surf group, the Go-Gos.

SOMEBODY'S WATCHING ME - Mark opened set six with this Rockwell (Kennedy William Gordy) song, featuring Jermaine Jackson on background vocals and Michael Jackson on the chorus.
Trivia: Berry Gordy named his son after John F. Kennedy and William "Smokey" Robinson.

DON'T FEAR THE REAPER - Mark opened the seventh set with this Blue Oyster Cult song, and talked about it was used in both the first and the (final) 13th movie in that Jamie Lee Curtis move franchise. Here's a TV ad for the first movie.

But did you know that Monkee Micky Dolenz was cast in the 2007 Rob Zombie-directed remake of Halloween?

HAUNTED HOUSE - Mark closed the seventh set with this song by Jumpin' Gene Simmons. Is the name familiar? The KISS bassist took his stage name from him....and Gene also co-wrote Tim McGraw's controversial INDIAN OUTLAW (which also features a piece of INDIAN RESERVATION in it.)
