This Week's
"DEEP DIVE"
SWEETS FOR MY SWEET
This weekend, Mark celebrates the 59th anniversary
of the introduction of the ubiquitous American snack, POP-TARTS,
by playing two hours of some SWEET music!
SWEET NOTHINS - Mark opened the show with Brenda Lee's classic song - since, as comedian Jerry Seinfeld quipped, "Pop-Tarts have the same nutritional value as the box they come in."

POP-TART - Of course, Mark had to start the first set with a song with that title! It's from Atlanta's THE VILLAINS.

SWEETS FOR MY SWEET - Mark closed the first set with this Raider tune that was recorded in February 1965 for possible inclusion on an early album, but it ended up sitting in the vault for decades until it came out on the Sundazed "MOJO WORKOUT" 2 CD set in 2013. You can hear a strong LOUIE LOUIE influence, including Drake emulating Steve West's original guitar solo from 1963.

SUGAR PIE HONEY BUNCH - Mark opened the fourth set with this JOHNNY OTIS song and talked about his lifetime accomplishments. He gave SUGAR PIE DESANTO her stage name, and she talks about him below.

DAVE BARRY AND OTHER SCIENTISTS - In between the fourth and fifth sets, Mark talked about the "slight" problem that could occur if Pop-Tarts were accidentally left unattended in defective toasters. More "scientific research" than you would imagine has been done on the issue, like the experiment below, which even made Dave Barry's blog. Pictured: reknowned scientist Dave Barry, who is still waiting for his Nobel Prize in Pop-Tartology.

UNFROSTED - THE POP-TART MOVIE - In between sets six and seven, Mark talked about Seinfeld expanding his Pop-Tart monolgue into a full-length Netflix movie, with A-List stars like Melissa McCarthy, Amy Schumer, and Hugh Grant. It'll be coming up on Netflix. Here's the scoop from VARIETY, and a clip with Jerry from TODAY.

POP THAT THANG - Mark closed the last set with the Isley Brothers, and here they are performing the song on a 1972 MIDNIGHT SPECIAL show.

Zara jacket in Jacksonville, Oregon in 2018.
He wore it every night on the Happy Together Tour that summer, and it's available with a selection of photos from that evening, in our shop.
