WINTER DANCE PARTY

Today's show features a tribute to the stars of the Winter Dance Party. Touring in today's era in a million $ luxury Prevost bus is still grueling, but in 1959, conditions were brutal. And the exhaustion from no days off, traveling hundreds of miles a day, and just being DONE with unheated buses long overdue for retirement led to the events of Febuary 3, 1959. Add in a well-meaning but unqualified fan/pilot and the results were inevitable. Tune in and hear the story.

The only known poster of the Moorhead, Minnesota show - which, unbelievably, wasn't canceled after the plane crash that killed Buddy Holly, The Big Bopper, and Ritchie Valens earlier that morning - sold in 2022 for a record $447,000.

THE FOUR MUST-SEE MOVIES:

-
Go Johnny Go (1959)
- The Buddy Holly Story (1978)
- The Real Buddy Holly Story (1985)
- La Bamba (1987)

I FOUGHT THE LAW
- In 1960, Buddy's old group, The Crickets, released the first version of the song. And here's a photo of Buddy holly before he split from The Crickets, with drummer Jerry Allison, who was the cousin of Raider Keith Allison. Keith was playing with Jerry in The Crickets in Las Vegas when Dick Clark finally found the Paul McCartney lookalike he'd been trying to track down, after fans wanted to know more about the guy who'd been in the audience at a taping of Where The Action Is.

JOHNNY B. GOODE/WHOLE LOTTA SHAKIN' - Mark opened set 7 with Keith Allison.

Keith tells the story behind the medley to Bill Kopp at MUSOSCRIBE - check out the multi-part interview.

It should be called “Shakin’ Johnny.” I told Mark [Lindsay], “ I want to cut two songs together like Mitch Ryder does. I love that stuff, and I want something really rockin’.” So we came up with “Johnny B. Goode” and “Whole Lotta Shakin’ Goin’ On” together. So we went and cut it; it was going to be my next single on Columbia. We were on the road; if I’m not mistaken, we were flying from Boston to Chicago. We got on the plane – Freddy [Weller] was sitting next to me – and Mark came and said to Freddy, “Can you change seats with me? I need to talk to Keith.” He had a long look on his face, and I went, “Uh-oh.”
He said, “I’m sorry. I’ve got some bad news. Before I left the hotel, I was talking to Columbia in New York. They’re not going to release your single.” I said, “What!?” I really liked the thing, and I thought it had a shot at the time. But they had just signed this kid from Texas called Johnny Winter, and he recorded “Johnny B. Goode.” And since they had paid $700,000 for him, Clive [Davis] wanted to get some of his money back. So I said, “Sonofabitch!” [laughs]

BOBBY VEE
- Fifteen-year-old Bobby Velline and his brother had tickets for the Moorhead show. But they ended up opening the show after a call was put out for "replacement acts" for Buddy, The Big Bopper, and Ritchie.
Three years later, he had a hit with THE NIGHT HAS A THOUSAND EYES, and Mark Lindsay saw him perform it at the D-Street Corral in Portland, Oregon.
